Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct on-site system surveys and technical site assessments to determine equipment placement, cable routes, power requirements, and integration points prior to intercom installation, producing clear site documentation and work scopes.
  • Design and propose intercom system layouts for residential and commercial projects, selecting appropriate devices (analog, IP, SIP) and accessories to meet customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Install low-voltage cabling (Cat5e/Cat6/UTP/STP), terminate RJ45 and RJ11 connectors, run conduit and raceways where required, and ensure consistent labeling and documentation of wiring and wiring closets.
  • Mount, wire, and configure indoor and outdoor intercom stations, door panels, master stations, video doorbells, gate entry systems, and associated power supplies using manufacturer best practices.
  • Program IP intercom endpoints and servers, configure SIP trunks, VoIP gateways, VLANs, static IP addressing, and QoS settings to ensure reliable voice and video performance across networks.
  • Integrate intercom systems with access control, CCTV, elevator systems, and building automation platforms to provide unified entry and monitoring solutions, coordinating with third-party contractors as necessary.
  • Perform system commissioning and acceptance testing, validate audio and video quality, verify door strike and lock operation, and generate final commissioning reports for clients and project managers.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot audio/video problems, power issues, network connectivity faults, firmware mismatches, and interoperability problems using industry-standard test equipment and vendor diagnostic tools.
  • Execute firmware and software updates on intercom hardware and servers, apply security patches, and maintain version control to reduce vulnerabilities and improve system stability.
  • Provide preventive maintenance services through scheduled site visits, cleaning, configuration verification, and the replacement of worn components to minimize downtime and extend system life.
  • Respond to emergency service requests and on-call tickets, performing rapid diagnostics and repairs while logging actions taken and parts used for billing and warranty tracking.
  • Prepare accurate service tickets, work orders, and service reports in the company CRM or field-service platform, capturing serial numbers, test readings, photos, and customer sign-offs.
  • Train end-users and building staff on basic operation, system features, troubleshooting steps, and maintenance best practices to reduce repeat service calls and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain parts inventory, order replacement components, and coordinate with procurement to ensure vehicle-stock and warehouse levels of frequently used intercom and low-voltage parts.
  • Follow local electrical, fire, and building codes as well as OSHA and company safety procedures when installing and servicing equipment, including ladder safety, lockout/tagout, and personal protective equipment.
  • Collaborate with sales and project management teams to produce accurate labor estimates, bill of materials, and time-to-complete projections for proposals and change orders.
  • Work with network teams and IT stakeholders to coordinate VLAN, firewall, and NAT configurations required for IP intercom solutions and remote diagnostics while respecting customer security policies.
  • Maintain and update system configuration databases, as-built drawings, and RMR (recurring monthly revenue) records to support service continuity and future upgrades.
  • Identify opportunities for system enhancements and upsell solutions such as video upgrades, remote monitoring subscriptions, cloud management, or mobile app integrations and communicate recommendations to sales or account managers.
  • Conduct post-installation follow-ups, collect customer feedback, resolve open issues, and ensure customer satisfaction and proper closure of service tickets.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in on-call rotations and provide timely remote support or escalation documentation to senior engineers when on-site resolution is not immediately possible.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior technicians and apprentices on installation standards, troubleshooting techniques, and safety practices.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work vehicle and workspace, ensuring tools and parts are secured and inventory records are accurate.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by contributing field insights to standard operating procedures, service playbooks, and knowledge base articles.
  • Help coordinate contractor scheduling and site access for larger integration projects, liaising with property managers and general contractors.
  • Support warranty claims and RMA processes by documenting failures, running diagnostic tests, and coordinating returns with vendors.
  • Update and maintain asset management systems and maps for multi-site accounts, ensuring accurate location and status of installed devices.
  • Assist pre-sales teams by providing technical input for proposals, bills of materials, and proof-of-concept testing when requested.
  • Help track service-level agreement (SLA) compliance metrics and contribute to weekly/monthly operational reporting.
  • Participate in product evaluation, lab testing, and pilot installations for new intercom platforms or integrations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient at low-voltage wiring, cable termination (RJ45/RJ11), punchdown (110/66), cable testing (Fluke or similar), and proper labeling/documentation of cable runs.
  • Strong understanding of IP networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, VLANs, DHCP, static IP configuration, subnetting, NAT, and QoS for voice/video traffic.
  • Hands-on experience configuring SIP/VoIP-based intercoms, SIP trunks, and interoperability with PBX or hosted UC platforms.
  • Familiarity with PoE (802.3af/at) power delivery, power budgeting, DC power systems, and power supply installation for intercom and peripheral devices.
  • Ability to program and configure intercom systems from major manufacturers (Aiphone, Comelit, 2N, Hikvision, Dahua, Siedle, etc.) and apply firmware updates.
  • Integration skills for access control systems, door strikes, magnetic locks, relay interfaces, and CCTV/VMS systems to provide cohesive security solutions.
  • Proficient in using field test equipment such as multimeters, network cable testers, tone generators, spectrum analyzers for Wi-Fi-interfaced devices, and video test monitors.
  • Experience with on-site commissioning processes, test plan execution, and generation of acceptance documentation and as-built drawings.
  • Knowledge of building codes, fire/life safety interface requirements, and compliance standards relevant to entry systems and low-voltage installations.
  • Familiarity with remote management tools, cloud-based device platforms, and secure remote diagnostic techniques for IP-enabled intercoms.
  • Basic server and virtualization familiarity for on-prem intercom servers, NVRs, or cloud gateway appliances (install, update, backup/recovery).
  • Proficient in completing and updating digital work orders, using field service management software, and maintaining accurate service log entries.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
High school diploma or GED with documented low-voltage or field-service training.

Preferred Education:
Associate degree or technical certificate in Electronics, Telecommunications, Electrical Technology, or Network Administration; manufacturer certifications (Aiphone, 2N, Comelit), CompTIA Network+, or BICSI installer coursework preferred.
