Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Accurately measure windows, recesses and mounting points on-site for curtains, blinds and tracks using professional measuring techniques and tools to ensure first-time-right fabrication and installation.
- Interpret customer specifications, technical drawings and order documentation to plan installations, advise on product suitability and confirm that supplied parts match job requirements.
- Fabricate, cut and prepare curtain headings, blind tapes, hems and fittings in the workshop when required, ensuring seams, hems and fastenings meet company quality standards.
- Install curtain tracks, poles, brackets and a wide range of blind systems (roller, Roman, vertical, venetian, pleated, panel) ensuring secure fixings and correct alignment for smooth operation.
- Fit and commission motorised blind and curtain track systems, program remotes, integrate with smart home systems where applicable and provide clear operating demonstrations to customers.
- Carry out bespoke fittings including bay windows, alcoves and non-standard apertures, modifying brackets and supports on-site where required to achieve a neat finish.
- Replace, repair and maintain existing window treatments and hardware, including re-stringing blinds, replacing slats, adjusting tracks and tightening or renewing fixings.
- Ensure accurate use of powered tools (drills, saws, crimpers) and hand tools while complying with safe working at heights procedures, ladder safety and fall-protection regulations.
- Manage full installation workflows from arrival to completion: unload van, check parts and tools, protect client premises (drop cloths, shoe covers), complete installation and leave site tidy.
- Provide professional on-site customer service: explain product operation, answer questions about materials and maintenance, and handle small scope changes tactfully.
- Produce clear post-installation documentation: completion notes, handover manuals, warranty information and record photographs for quality control.
- Work with the sales and estimating team to review site survey notes, advise on practical installation solutions and identify additional repair or upgrade opportunities.
- Liaise with other trades on multi-disciplinary projects (decorators, electricians, window fitters) to coordinate installation timing and avoid damage to finishes.
- Conduct pre-installation site checks for structural suitability, presence of concealed services and potential obstacles; escalate issues and offer alternative solutions when needed.
- Follow company processes for job reporting, time sheets, parts returns and stock replenishment; maintain a well-organised van inventory of common fixings and spare parts.
- Adhere to health & safety policies including risk assessments, COSHH awareness for adhesives and cleaning agents, and manual handling best practices during lifts and installations.
- Train and mentor junior fitters and apprentices on measurement techniques, installation standards and customer service expectations to maintain consistent workmanship.
- Test finished installations for smooth operation, correct alignment and safety (e.g., cord safety for children, tensioning of roller blinds) and rectify any snags before sign-off.
- Provide accurate estimates for site-based modifications, additional hardware or remedial works requested by clients, ensuring pricing reflects labour and materials.
- Undertake occasional workshop duties such as cutting tracks, assembling blind components, and preparing curtain headings to support the production team during busy periods.
- Respond to service calls for emergency repairs, on-site adjustments and warranty-related work with a customer-focused attitude and clear communication about timelines.
- Keep up to date with new products, motorisation options, control systems and industry best practices to recommend modern, cost-effective solutions to clients.
- Accurately read and interpret product specification sheets and manufacturer installation guides to ensure compliance with warranty and safety requirements.
- Ensure all installations meet relevant building regulations, fire safety guidance for curtains and blinds in commercial settings, and accessibility considerations where applicable.
