Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead the detailed engineering and 3D CAD modeling of interior structures, furniture, panels, and modular assemblies using tools such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Revit, or NX, producing fully dimensioned manufacturing drawings and BOMs that meet company CAD and PLM standards.
  • Translate conceptual and interior architectural layouts into engineered solutions that satisfy functional requirements (ergonomics, sightlines, ingress/egress), structural loads, weight targets, and aesthetic finish standards while maintaining cost and manufacturability constraints.
  • Develop and maintain part and assembly models, drawings, and revision-controlled documentation in the PLM/PDM system (e.g., Windchill, Teamcenter), ensuring traceability of design changes and engineering approvals for production release.
  • Define materials and finish specifications (composite panels, laminates, foams, textiles, metals) and work with vendors to validate material properties, fire/smoke/flame characteristics, toxicity, durability and maintainability for the intended application.
  • Coordinate cross-functional integration with mechanical systems, HVAC, electrical routing, lighting, acoustics, and structural interfaces to ensure seamless fit, serviceability and compliance with system-level requirements.
  • Conduct structural and load analyses for interior components (using FEA tools where applicable), validate attachment points and fastener designs, and iterate designs to meet safety margins and vibration/strength requirements.
  • Create and execute test plans for prototypes including fit-checks, structural load testing, fatigue and vibration testing, flame and smoke testing, and human factors/ergonomics evaluation; document results and drive corrective actions.
  • Support supplier development activities: qualify suppliers, review supplier drawings and processes, perform source inspections, and ensure incoming parts meet engineering and quality standards.
  • Prepare cost estimates and feasibility assessments for interior modifications and design alternatives; collaborate with procurement and program management to optimize cost, lead time and supplier footprint.
  • Implement and manage change control processes for interior designs, generating engineering change notices (ECNs), assessing impacts across systems, and communicating updates to manufacturing, supply chain and service teams.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and industry regulations (ADA, NFPA, FAA/EASA/Transport Canada standards for aircraft interiors; IMO/ABS for marine interiors; local building codes for commercial interiors), and support certification activities with regulatory bodies.
  • Perform interface definition and tolerance allocation work to ensure assemblies fit within allocated space envelopes, including gap and flushness control, fastener locations and service access panels.
  • Generate detailed installation instructions, assembly guides, and maintenance documentation for production, field installation teams and service technicians, including tooling and special process requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with design, UX, and branding teams to translate aesthetic concepts into feasible engineering solutions while preserving the customer experience and manufacturability.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in interior design for weight reduction, part consolidation, modularization and improved manufacturability, leveraging DFMA principles and value engineering workshops.
  • Mentor junior engineers and drafters on best practices for CAD modeling, drawing standards, materials selection and integration processes to raise team capability and productivity.
  • Plan and coordinate prototyping and mock‑up builds (full-scale and partial), including defining scope, materials, test objectives, and the validation checklist to demonstrate compliance with program requirements.
  • Troubleshoot in‑service issues and field defects related to interiors; lead root cause analysis, implement corrective actions and update design standards to prevent recurrence.
  • Participate in project planning and program reviews, estimate engineering effort and schedule, and communicate status, risks and mitigation plans to program managers and stakeholders.
  • Manage interfaces with certification and quality teams, ensuring all required test reports, analyses, and compliance evidence are included in certification packages and customer deliverables.
  • Lead risk assessments for interior-related hazards (fire, smoke, flammability, sharp edges, pinch points), document mitigations in FMEAs, and ensure design validation addresses identified risks.
  • Support sustainability goals by evaluating recyclable materials, end-of-life disassembly, and low-VOC finishes as part of material selection and supplier qualification.
  • Provide on-site support during first article inspections, production ramp-up, factory acceptance tests, and field installations to resolve emergent engineering issues rapidly and ensure schedule adherence.
  • Liaise with program stakeholders to incorporate customer feedback, warranty trends and aftermarket requirements into design updates and future product roadmaps.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends, new materials, and advanced manufacturing processes (additive manufacturing, composites, CNC machining) to introduce innovative solutions that improve performance and reduce cost.

Secondary Functions

  • Support proposals and bid engineering by preparing concept layouts, engineering scope estimates, and design feasibility statements to win interior work packages.
  • Maintain and improve interior engineering standards, templates and libraries (standard fasteners, clips, panel families) to accelerate design reuse and ensure consistency across programs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and surfacing using SolidWorks, CATIA V5/V6, Siemens NX, or Autodesk Revit; ability to create production-ready models, assemblies and 2D drawings.
  • Strong experience with PLM/PDM systems (Windchill, Teamcenter, ENOVIA) for revision control, BOM management and ECN processing.

  • Competence in developing test plans and leading prototype validation activities (fit, finish, structural, environmental and flammability testing).
  • Experience writing clear technical documentation: installation guides, maintenance manuals, interface control drawings, and inspection plans.
  • Familiar with cost modeling, DFM/DFMA principles, supplier qualification, and sourcing strategies to balance cost, weight and performance.
  • Comfortable using MS Office suite (Excel for budgets and BOMs, PowerPoint for reviews) and visualization tools for customer presentations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Interior Architecture, Industrial Design, Aerospace Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a closely related technical discipline.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Industrial Design, or Interior Architecture.
  • Certifications in project management (PMP), GD&T, or relevant industry certifications (e.g., FAA DER experience for aircraft interiors).
