Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  1. Inspect, diagnose and perform repairs on seating systems, seat tracks, rail attachments and restraint components to ensure functional integrity and safety compliance.
  2. Remove, disassemble and reinstall interior components including seats, carpets, headliners, door panels, consoles and trim for vehicle and aircraft cabins, following OEM and STC instructions.
  3. Read, interpret and work from technical drawings, engineering layouts, bill of materials (BOMs) and installation guides to accurately fabricate and fit interior parts.
  4. Fabricate, cut and sew upholstery components using industrial sewing machines, pattern templates and hand-stitch techniques for custom and production interiors.
  5. Measure, mark and trim foam, leather, vinyl and fabric to specified tolerances; perform foam shaping, skiving, and laminating to meet ergonomic and aesthetic requirements.
  6. Prepare surfaces for installation and refinishing by cleaning, sanding, priming and applying sealants and adhesives according to material and safety specifications.
  7. Apply adhesives, rivets, screws, fasteners and mechanical attachments for permanent and serviceable interior installations, ensuring consistent torque and secure fastening methods.
  8. Repair or replace interior substrate, composite panels, and decorative elements using authorized repair techniques, composite layup, bonding and finishing processes.
  9. Execute carpet installation and underlayment fitting including heat-shaping, trimming, seam sealing and alignment to prevent premature wear and noise.
  10. Perform upholstery repairs including patching, re-stitching, zipper replacement, foam replacement and color-matching of leather and vinyl surfaces.
  11. Conduct fit checks and iterative adjustments—trim alignment, gap inspection, and aesthetic verification—prior to final installation and handoff.
  12. Complete pre-delivery inspections (PDI) and final quality checks using established QA checklists and measurement tools (calipers, gauges, templates).
  13. Maintain accurate work orders, repair logs, material usage records and digital documentation (photos and notes) to support traceability and customer records.
  14. Coordinate with engineering and design teams to revise templates, patterns and installation procedures to improve fit, manufacturability and serviceability.
  15. Troubleshoot intermittent fitment issues, rattles and squeaks within cabins by isolating root causes and implementing permanent corrective actions (insulation, padding, fasteners).
  16. Follow company and regulatory safety policies, PPE requirements and environmental handling procedures for adhesives, solvents and composite materials.
  17. Stock, label and manage interior materials and consumables—leather, fabric bolts, foam blocks, adhesive cartridges—and submit reorder requests to Purchasing.
  18. Calibrate and maintain hand and power tools, sewing machines, heat guns, pneumatic tools, rivet guns and specialty interior tooling to ensure safe and accurate operation.
  19. Train junior technicians and apprentices in proper upholstery techniques, safe tool usage and quality standards to build internal craftsmanship capability.
  20. Support scheduled refurbishments and retrofit programs, including removal of obsolete components and installation of upgrade kits or customer-specified modifications.
  21. Liaise with vendors and trim suppliers to source specialty fabrics, fasteners and finishing products; evaluate samples and manage sample approvals.
  22. Adhere to industry regulations when applicable (FAA, OEM service bulletins, DOT, or marine safety standards), document compliance and support audits.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in continuous improvement projects to reduce installation time and material waste through better fixturing, jigs and standardized templates.
  • Provide technical feedback for new product introductions (NPI) based on hands-on assembly challenges and customer service feedback.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings with production planning, quality assurance and procurement to align schedules and resolve supply issues.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area; follow 5S and lean manufacturing best practices to improve flow and reduce defects.
  • Support ad-hoc repair requests for warranty claims and perform root-cause analysis for recurring issues to recommend corrective actions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced upholstery techniques: pattern layout, cutting, sewing, hemming, and finishing for leather, vinyl and woven fabrics.
  • Foam cutting and shaping, foam lamination and skiving for seat cushions and armrests.
  • Proficient with industrial sewing machines (walking foot, post-bed) and hand-stitch techniques for visible seams.
  • Experience installing and servicing seating systems, seat hardware, seat tracks and restraint attachments.
  • Skilled in fitting carpets, headliners, door panels, consoles and trim with precision trimming and heat forming.
  • Competence with adhesives, sealants and bonding agents (contact adhesives, epoxy, structural adhesives) and proper surface prep.
  • Composite repair fundamentals: layup, sanding, bonding and finishing of interior composite panels (preferred for aerospace/marine roles).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, CAD prints, BOMs and engineering change orders.
  • Proficient with hand and power tools including rivet guns, torque wrenches, pneumatic staplers, heat guns, and calipers.
  • Quality inspection and PDI skills: gap alignment, fitment verification, dimensional tolerances and cosmetic acceptance criteria.
  • Inventory control basics: material tracking, labeling, and usage reporting for upholstery materials and consumables.
  • Familiarity with regulatory standards where applicable (FAA 14 CFR basics, OEM service bulletins, DOT, marine safety).
  • Basic computer skills for work order management, digital photo documentation and inventory systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
High school diploma or GED; vocational training or certificate in upholstery, vehicle interior repair, or a related trade is preferred.

Preferred Education:
Technical diploma or certificate in Upholstery, Automotive Technology, Aircraft Maintenance, Composite Fabrication, or Industrial Sewing.
