- Operate and maintain in-house laboratory analyzers (CBC, chemistry, electrolytes, point-of-care blood gas), perform quality control, and communicate abnormal results to the medical team.
- Prepare, stain, and interpret direct cytology and cytospin slides for rapid onsite review, identify common findings (inflammation, neoplasia, infectious agents), and facilitate internist evaluation.
- Assist with diagnostic imaging procedures (abdominal and thoracic radiographs, contrast studies) including patient positioning, sedation or anesthesia support, and safety protocols.
- Set up and assist during abdominal and thoracic ultrasound exams and ultrasound-guided procedures (fine needle aspirates, biopsies), maintaining sterility and assisting with sample acquisition.
- Support endoscopic procedures by preparing equipment, instilling topical/local anesthesia as directed, assisting in foreign body retrieval and biopsy collection, and monitoring the patient throughout.
- Perform thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis, lumbar puncture, and other bedside procedures under clinician supervision, ensuring patient stabilization and safe sample submission.
- Monitor and manage oxygen therapy and respiratory support devices including flow-by oxygen, nasal cannula, oxygen cage, and non-rebreather masks; perform suctioning and basic respiratory assessments.
- Assist with advanced monitoring modalities including ECG acquisition and preliminary interpretation, blood pressure (Doppler/oscillometric), and capnography when applicable.
- Maintain accurate, detailed medical records, record nursing notes, medication administration logs, and procedure records to support continuity of care and billing accuracy.
- Educate and counsel owners on complex medical conditions, home care instructions, medication administration techniques, and follow-up plans in a clear, empathetic, and documented manner.
- Coordinate care between internists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and referring veterinarians including arranging consults, transferring records, and communicating status updates.
- Prepare sterile instrument packs and assist with sterile procedures, enforce aseptic technique, and participate in infection control and hospital safety protocols.
- Manage and troubleshoot infusion pumps, syringe drivers, and monitoring equipment, performing routine calibrations and escalating technical issues to biomedical services.
- Oversee overnight or in-hospital patient care protocols, perform shift handoffs, and maintain continuity between day teams and on-call clinicians.
- Participate in case rounds and interdisciplinary discussions, present patient updates concisely, and contribute to diagnostic and therapeutic planning.
- Support the internist in case-based research and quality improvement initiatives by collecting data, maintaining case logs, and assisting with literature searches or protocol development.
- Lead or participate in technician training and mentorship on internal medicine protocols, procedures, and advanced nursing skills to elevate team competency.
- Ensure medication inventory, specialty supplies (IV fluids, catheters, transfusion supplies), and controlled substance logs are current and stocked for internal medicine caseloads.
- Conduct pain assessments and implement analgesic plans under clinician direction, monitoring efficacy and side effects and documenting changes.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with outpatient follow-up phone calls and coordinate scheduling for rechecks, diagnostics, and specialist appointments.
- Support hospital-wide quality assurance by participating in morbidity and mortality reviews and protocol audits.
- Help maintain clinic cleanliness and organization in specialty areas, including sterilization of reusable equipment and proper waste disposal.
- Contribute to client education materials and discharge summaries for common internal medicine conditions (e.g., IMHA, pancreatitis, renal disease, endocrine disorders).
- Participate in continuing education and in-service training; identify knowledge gaps and recommend team training topics to improve internal medicine care delivery.
