This role includes fiber, coax, and copper cable work, in-home device configuration (ONTs, modems, routers), network testing and troubleshooting, accurate job documentation, and adherence to company safety and quality standards. The ideal candidate combines strong technical skills (fiber splicing, OTDR, cable pulling, Ethernet and Wi‑Fi configuration), excellent customer communication, and reliable field operations practices.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform full site surveys and pre-install assessments at customer locations to identify optimal cable routes, service entry points, and potential safety or permitting requirements, documenting findings in the work order system.
  • Install, terminate, and protect fiber optic and copper cabling (indoor and outdoor) including pulling cable through conduit, attaching aerial drops, and performing proper weatherproofing and strain relief to company and industry standards.
  • Perform fiber splicing and termination using fusion splicers, mechanical splices, and hand termination techniques; prepare and polish fiber connectors as required for reliable signal transmission.
  • Conduct comprehensive optical testing using OTDR and power meters to validate fiber continuity, loss budgets, and to isolate faults; interpret test results and document them in customer records.
  • Mount, configure and activate customer premises equipment (CPE) including ONTs, modems, routers, Wi‑Fi extenders and VoIP adapters; ensure firmware and provisioning settings comply with service requirements.
  • Configure home and small-business networks (SSID setup, WPA2/WPA3 security, IP addressing, DHCP, VLANs as required) and verify Wi‑Fi coverage, making recommendations for extenders or mesh systems.
  • Validate service quality by performing speed tests, throughput verification, latency/jitter checks, and signal-level measurements; record results and provide clear communication to customers about expected performance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve installation and activation issues end-to-end, escalating complex network or backbone problems to engineering/NOC while owning the customer communication loop until resolution.
  • Install and connect network demarcation devices (NID, ONT, splitter enclosures) and ensure proper grounding, bonding, and compliance with local electrical and telecom codes.
  • Complete accurate, timely documentation in ticketing and workforce management systems (work order notes, test result uploads, photos, customer signatures), ensuring billing and provisioning accuracy.
  • Follow company safety protocols and OSHA guidelines for ladder/roof work, confined spaces and trenching; perform daily vehicle and tool safety inspections and maintain a clean, compliant work area.
  • Coordinate with municipal authorities, property managers, and utility companies to obtain permits, schedule pole attachments or sidewalk/trench work, and comply with local regulations.
  • Maintain inventory control of parts, customer premises equipment and materials; complete material requests and reconcile field inventory with dispatch.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by explaining installation steps, demonstrating devices, educating customers on basic network troubleshooting, and documenting customer preferences and access notes.
  • Execute in-home wiring, outlet installation and label network terminations to industry best practices, ensuring future serviceability and minimal impact on home aesthetics.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and repair on existing customer lines and hardware, replacing damaged cables, connectors, splitters, or CPE to restore service reliability.
  • Participate in planned fiber or network upgrades (cutovers), coordinating with internal teams to schedule customer migrations, performing cutovers with minimal downtime and validating post-cutover service.
  • Adhere to company escalation procedures for unsafe job sites, complex technical faults, or service exceptions; create clear incident reports when needed.
  • Train and mentor junior installers and apprentices on installation standards, safety practices and customer engagement techniques to maintain consistent service quality across the team.
  • Use electronic maps, GPS, and asset-management tools to locate network assets, record new build coordinates, and update network documentation for accurate as‑built records.
  • Operate specialty field equipment (vacuum excavation, boring machines, bucket trucks) under certified supervision where required, ensuring compliance with equipment operation standards.
  • Support emergency response and outage restoration efforts by prioritizing critical service restores, mobilizing to affected areas, and coordinating with restoration teams until normal operation is restored.
  • Maintain company vehicle, tools and equipment in clean, operational condition; complete daily pre-trip inspections and report maintenance needs to fleet management.
  • Provide feedback to product and engineering teams on customer pain points, device behaviors, and field challenges to help improve provisioning logic, firmware, and installation procedures.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with small-scale network buildouts and pilot deployments by providing practical field feedback and participating in rollouts.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings with dispatch, provisioning and engineering to improve SLA adherence and reduce repeat truck rolls.
  • Help develop and update installation guides, knowledge base articles and internal training content based on field experience.
  • Support inventory audits and parts lifecycle initiatives to optimize on-truck stock and reduce fulfillment delays.
  • Provide occasional weekend or after-hours coverage for scheduled cutovers, planned outages, or emergency repairs as required.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Fiber optic splicing and termination (fusion splicing, mechanical splices, connector terminations)
  • Proficiency with OTDR, optical power meters, light sources and fiber inspection scopes
  • Copper and coaxial cable termination, testing and troubleshooting (RG‑6, Cat5e/6/6A)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with technical trade experience or vocational training in telecommunications or electrical work.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or technical certificate in Telecommunications, Electrical Technology, Network Engineering, or related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1–5 years of field installation experience in telecommunications, cable, fiber optic or ISP environments.

Preferred: 2–4 years of hands-on fiber and/or residential broadband installation experience, including splicing, OTDR testing, and CPE provisioning. Previous experience using field ticketing systems and completing work to industry compliance standards is highly desirable.
