Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Acquire and document diagnostic recordings and images (e.g., ECG, EEG, Holter, telemetry, radiographic, ultrasound, NDT scans) following established clinical protocols to ensure reproducible, high-quality data suitable for clinical interpretation and archival.
  • Prepare patients or test specimens for diagnostic procedures, including verifying patient identity, explaining the procedure, obtaining consent where required, and applying recording leads, electrodes, or sensors in accordance with infection control and safety policies.
  • Operate, calibrate, and troubleshoot interpretation equipment and peripherals (monitors, amplifiers, imaging systems, signal processors) to maintain consistent data quality and minimize artifacts that could compromise interpretation.
  • Perform primary review and technical interpretation of diagnostic signals and images to identify normal vs. abnormal patterns, annotate key events/waveforms, and flag urgent findings for immediate clinician escalation per triage protocols.
  • Use specialized software (PACS, DICOM viewers, EEG/ECG analysis suites, Holter analysis platforms, or proprietary interpretation tools) to process, filter, segment, and annotate diagnostic datasets prior to clinician review.
  • Generate and deliver structured preliminary reports and worksheets summarizing technical observations, test conditions, and annotated findings while clearly distinguishing technician-level notes from physician diagnostic interpretations.

  • Assist cardiologists, neurologists, radiologists, or NDT engineers by preparing case packets, exporting annotated segments, and providing concise technical summaries for efficient clinician interpretation and reporting.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case reviews and morbidity & mortality or quality improvement meetings by presenting technical findings, imaging artifacts, and opportunities to improve acquisition protocols or workflows.
  • Maintain inventory of disposables, electrodes, cabling, and calibration tools; schedule preventive maintenance and coordinate service calls with biomedical engineering or vendor support to ensure continuous operational readiness.
  • Implement and document new protocols, electrode placements, imaging parameters, or post-processing techniques under direction of clinical leads to support evolving clinical requirements and research projects.
  • Support remote interpretation workflows by packaging high-fidelity datasets, ensuring secure transmission, and confirming receipt and integrity of transmitted files for off-site reviewers or telehealth partners.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians, students, and cross-trained staff on equipment operation, documentation best practices, and safety/sterilization procedures to build team competency and consistency.
  • Adhere to radiation safety, biosafety, and electrical safety standards when applicable; wear monitoring devices and follow ALARA principles and institutional safety programs in imaging environments.
  • Maintain detailed, audit-ready logs of performed procedures, equipment status, image acquisition parameters, and corrective actions to support accreditation and regulatory inspections (e.g., Joint Commission, ACR).
  • Collaborate with clinical informatics and IT teams to test and validate software updates, workflows, DICOM/PACS integrations, and data migration tasks, including participation in user acceptance testing and go-live support.
  • Contribute to departmental performance targets by measuring turnaround times, study rejection rates, and technician error logs; propose and implement process improvements to increase throughput and diagnostic reliability.
  • Support clinical research studies by enrolling participants, following study-specific acquisition protocols, creating de-identified datasets, and delivering documented procedures for reproducibility.
  • Provide on-call or after-hours coverage as required to support emergent diagnostic needs, ensure handoffs are documented, and coordinate with on-call clinicians for immediate consults and reporting.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Clinical Diagnostics, Biomedical Engineering, Radiologic Technology, Clinical Neurophysiology, Cardiovascular Technology, or a related technical/healthcare discipline.
