Key Responsibilities and Required Skills for Intonation Technician
💰 $40,000 - $70,000
🎯 Role Definition
An Intonation Technician is a skilled technical specialist who diagnoses, adjusts and verifies the pitch, tonal balance and playability of musical instruments (most commonly guitars, basses, and pianos) using a combination of trained aural skills and precision measurement tools. This role blends traditional luthier techniques (truss rod adjustment, fret dressing, saddle/shim work, action regulation, voicing) with modern measurement tools (strobe tuners, FFT/frequency analysis software, calipers) to deliver consistent intonation, optimized playability and documented quality across service, production and R&D environments. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong troubleshooting, documentation and customer-communication capabilities, and contributes to continuous improvement of setup and QA processes.

Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Diagnose intonation and tuning issues across the full range of the instrument using both trained ear and precision tools (strobe tuner, spectrum analyzer, high-resolution chromatic tuners) and document root causes and corrective action plans.
- Execute full instrument setups to factory or custom customer specifications, including neck relief/truss rod adjustments, fret leveling/dressing, string height (action) adjustments, nut slot filing, saddle compensation, and pickup height optimization to achieve consistent intonation.
- Perform pitch and temperament adjustments for pianos and keyboards through regulation, voicing and hammer/shank modifications to ensure uniform tone and tuning stability across registers.
- Calibrate and maintain test equipment (strobe tuners, microphone arrays, reference oscillators, calibration blocks) and verify measurement accuracy before production or service runs.
- Implement and follow standardized intonation procedures and checklists on the production line or in the repair shop to reduce rework and ensure repeatable setup quality.
- Troubleshoot and repair electronic components that affect tuning and intonation (active pickup preamps, piezo systems, tuners, bridges with electronic saddles) in collaboration with electronics technicians.
- Execute precise fretwork including crowning, re-fretting, fret dressing and polishing to correct buzzing, dead notes and inconsistent action affecting intonation.
- Measure and record action, string spacing, scale length, saddle height and nut slot dimensions using precision hand tools (feeler gauges, radius gauges, digital calipers) and update service records.
- Advise customers on setup options and trade-offs (action vs. playability, intonation vs. string gauge) and produce clear service estimates and aftercare recommendations.
- Validate intonation over multiple string gauges and playing styles (light touch, heavy strumming) and recommend compensations or hardware upgrades (compensated saddles, compensated nuts, locking tuners) when necessary.
- Lead or participate in quality assurance inspections of finished instruments, performing systematic intonation sweeps and tonal checks before release to retail or shipment.
- Implement seasonal tuning strategies and humidity-related maintenance protocols (especially for acoustic guitars and pianos) to maximize stability and minimize return service events.
- Maintain parts inventory, order replacement saddles, nuts, strings and specialty tools, and manage vendor relationships for spares required for intonation corrections.
- Collaborate with R&D, product design or manufacturing engineering to provide user-feedback, intonation metrics and improvement recommendations for new instrument designs or bridge hardware.
- Create and maintain clear, searchable service records and intonation reports in the shop management system to support warranty decisions and historical diagnostics.
- Train junior technicians and apprentices on intonation theory, measurement best practices, safe tool usage and shop quality standards to elevate team capability and consistency.
- Maintain a clean, organized and safety-compliant workstation and follow shop safety protocols for chemicals, solvents, compressed air and woodworking/electrical tools.
- Perform corrosion, wear and mechanical integrity inspections of bridges, saddles and tuners that can affect string tension and tuning stability and recommend appropriate part replacements.
- Conduct basic acoustic analysis (spectral plots, harmonic content checks) when diagnosing complex tuning anomalies or when optimizing tone across an instrument’s dynamic range.
- Deliver timely turnaround on service orders by planning work sequences, prioritizing urgent repairs and communicating realistic timelines to customers and stakeholders.
- Support field service assignments for live events or artist rigs, performing on-site intonation checks, emergency adjustments and preventive maintenance under time-constrained conditions.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives such as reducing setup time per instrument, standardizing parts kits and documenting lean workflows that preserve quality while increasing throughput.
- Validate and implement alternative tuning systems or custom temperaments as requested by customers or product teams (e.g., alternate tunings, just intonation, microtonal setups) and document calibration steps.
Secondary Functions
- Provide pre-sale technical consultations for customers considering custom setups, upgrades or instrument purchases with an emphasis on intonation and playability.
- Support warranty claim investigations by reproducing reported intonation issues, compiling evidence and coordinating with warranty administrators.
- Assist in the development of technical content for knowledge bases, repair manuals, video tutorials and FAQ documentation to improve customer self-service and reduce repetitive support queries.
- Participate in cross-functional meetings with sales, product and engineering teams to articulate technician-level constraints and recommend product design improvements that reduce intonation-related service events.
- Help organize and run periodic calibration and preventive maintenance schedules for shared workshop tools and measurement devices.
- Contribute to vendor evaluations by testing alternative hardware (bridges, saddles, tuners) and recommending items that improve tuning stability and reduce post-sale complaints.
