Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead end-to-end ideation and concept development: perform systematic inventive thinking, technology scouting, and opportunity mapping to generate high-impact, patentable product and process concepts aligned with business strategy.
  • Translate user needs and market opportunities into technical specifications and invention disclosures that are clear, defensible, and actionable for patent counsel and R&D teams.
  • Conduct rigorous feasibility studies, proof-of-concept experiments, and risk assessments to validate core technical assumptions and identify critical path items for invention maturation.
  • Design, build, and iterate physical and digital prototypes using hands-on fabrication (3D printing, CNC, electronics lab work) as well as simulation tools (FEA, CFD, circuit simulation) to demonstrate functionality and performance.
  • Develop and execute test plans for functional verification, reliability testing, and design validation; collect and analyze experimental data and translate results into engineering decisions and design improvements.
  • Prepare detailed technical documentation, invention disclosures, drawings, specifications, BOMs, and test reports to support patent filings, regulatory submissions, and handoff to productization teams.
  • Own the invention-to-patent workflow: collaborate with patent attorneys, draft provisional and non-provisional patent applications, manage prior art searches, and respond to examiner actions to secure robust IP protection.
  • Create and maintain prototypes, lab notebooks, and reproducible experimental setups; ensure traceability of design iterations and maintain IP confidentiality protocols.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with product management, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and marketing to translate inventions into manufacturable, cost-effective products and to create go-to-market roadmaps.
  • Lead technical reviews and stage-gate presentations for senior leadership, clearly articulating technical innovation, differentiation, commercialization risks, and potential return on innovation.
  • Evaluate materials, components, sensors, and sub-systems for performance, reliability, cost, and supply chain feasibility; recommend suppliers, perform vendor evaluations, and lead material characterization.
  • Integrate hardware, firmware, and software components into cohesive system-level prototypes; develop embedded code, control strategies, or algorithms as applicable to demonstrate end-to-end functionality.
  • Optimize designs for manufacturability and serviceability: propose design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-test (DFT) changes, participate in pilot production, and iterate tooling and assembly processes.
  • Mentor and coach junior inventors, engineers, and cross-discipline interns; lead small technical teams during rapid prototyping sprints and design-build-test cycles.
  • Monitor technology trends, competitive patents, and academic research; conduct freedom-to-operate analyses and present implications for the company’s IP and product strategy.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation for invention projects; prioritize scope to focus on high-impact technical milestones and commercialization pathways.
  • Define performance metrics and technical success criteria for inventions; track progress and adapt experimental plans to achieve measurable outcomes and milestones.
  • Lead safety, regulatory, and compliance planning for prototype testing and eventual product release (e.g., CE, UL, FCC, medical device standards) and coordinate external lab testing where required.
  • Facilitate commercialization handoff: produce build instructions, QA test plans, calibration procedures, and training materials for manufacturing and service teams to scale inventions into production.
  • Negotiate and manage contract engineering, prototyping vendors, and academic or industry collaborations to accelerate delivery of complex subsystems or specialized testing.
  • Present technical concepts, prototypes, and patent strategies to executive stakeholders and potential partners or investors; prepare concise, high-impact demo stories and technical pitch decks.
  • Continuously refine invention processes: propose improvements to ideation workshops, IP intake, prototyping lab practices, and cross-functional communication to shorten time-to-innovation.
  • Participate in strategic business discussions to align research priorities with market needs, pricing strategies, and long-term product roadmaps; provide technical input into business cases and commercialization forecasts.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and curate a centralized prototype and IP repository (digital models, test data, experiment logs) to accelerate future invention cycles.
  • Support ad-hoc technical assessments and exploratory research requests from product management or corporate development teams.
  • Assist in preparing grant proposals, technical appendices, or SBIR/STTR submissions when applicable to extend research funding and technology validation.
  • Contribute to internal invention workshops, hackathons, and cross-discipline brainstorming sessions to foster a culture of innovation.
  • Provide technical due diligence support for M&A, licensing discussions, or technology partnerships by evaluating novelty, feasibility, and IP strength.
  • Train manufacturing or pilot-line personnel on production of novel components and support early production ramps to resolve technical issues quickly.
  • Help establish lab safety protocols, equipment purchasing priorities, and maintenance schedules for prototyping facilities and test equipment.

  • Rapid prototyping: hands-on expertise with 3D printing (SLA, FDM), CNC machining, laser cutting, assembly, and finishing techniques.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Materials, Systems), Physics, Applied Science, or equivalent hands-on experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree or PhD in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline or equivalent research experience plus demonstrable track record of patents/prototypes.

  • Demonstrated experience with cross-functional commercialization and working with external patent counsel.
  • Experience in regulated industries (medical devices, automotive, aerospace) or consumer electronics depending on company focus.
