Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead and execute regular cycle counts and periodic full physical inventories to maintain perpetual inventory accuracy, identify root causes for discrepancies, and implement corrective action plans to reduce variance over time.
- Develop, maintain, and optimize SKU-level replenishment parameters including reorder points, safety stock, min/max levels, and economic order quantities in the ERP or WMS to drive consistent in-stock performance and reduce excess carry.
- Manage day-to-day inventory flows across receiving, put-away, picking, packing, and shipping to ensure accurate movement and traceability of goods; validate barcode/RFID scans and transaction integrity.
- Monitor key inventory KPIs such as inventory accuracy, fill rate, days of inventory on hand (DOH), turns, shrinkage, and on-time fulfillment; prepare weekly/monthly dashboards and executive summaries for operations leadership.
- Coordinate cross-functionally with purchasing, merchandising, sales, and operations to align inventory strategy with demand forecasts, promotions, and seasonal plans to avoid stockouts and overstock situations.
- Lead root cause analysis for recurring inventory issues (mis-picks, mis-slots, receiving errors, vendor short/over-shipments) and design process changes, training, or technology fixes to eliminate systemic problems.
- Implement and maintain inventory controls and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for receiving, put-away, cycle counting, returns processing, and physical inventory to ensure compliance and consistency.
- Oversee vendor-managed inventory (VMI) and supplier replenishment programs where applicable; collaborate with suppliers to improve lead times, order accuracy, and vendor performance metrics.
- Execute SKU rationalization and obsolescence programs by analyzing slow-moving stock, returns, and margin impacts; recommend disposition strategies including markdowns, promotions, transfers, or liquidation.
- Coordinate and supervise inbound receiving operations including verification of PO quantities, quality inspection flags, discrepancy resolution, and communication with suppliers and carriers.
- Maintain accurate item master data and BOMs (where applicable), ensuring product attributes, units of measure, barcodes, and storage locations are correctly configured in the ERP/WMS.
- Drive inventory accuracy improvements through cycle count optimization, slotting projects, pick path redesign, and lean warehouse initiatives that improve throughput and reduce handling time.
- Manage returns and reverse logistics processes, including quality inspection, restocking, refurbish or disposition decisions, and RMA reconciliation with finance and vendor partners.
- Plan and execute seasonal inventory initiatives — pre-season build, promotional ramp-up, and post-season clearance — to support marketing and merchandising plans while minimizing excess inventories.
- Lead new product introductions from an inventory perspective: establish stocking policies, initial replenishment quantities, lead-time tracking, and first-replenishment monitoring to ensure smooth launch fulfillment.
- Implement and maintain FIFO/FEFO (First-In-First-Out / First-Expired-First-Out) processes for relevant SKUs, particularly perishable, regulated, or serialized inventory.
- Support warehouse technology programs including WMS upgrades, barcode/RFID implementations, mobile scanning, and automation projects; validate inventory data migration and reconciliation after go-lives.
- Manage inter-warehouse and store transfers to balance inventory across network locations, minimize stockouts, and reduce expedited transportation costs.
- Develop and deliver regular training for warehouse and store teams on inventory best practices, cycle count techniques, and transaction handling to improve accuracy and compliance.
- Collaborate with finance for monthly inventory reconciliation, variance analysis, stock adjustments, and audit preparation to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Lead or participate in continuous improvement projects (Lean, Kaizen, Six Sigma) focused on reducing cycle time, lowering carrying costs, and improving order accuracy.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, safety, and company policy requirements related to inventory handling, storage of hazardous materials, and traceability where applicable.
- Partner with IT and data teams to build automated alerts and workflows for low stock, overstock, expiration, and potential stock discrepancies to enable proactive resolution.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
- Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
- Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
- Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.
- Provide backup support for warehouse supervisor duties during peak periods or staffing shortages.
- Assist merchandising and marketing teams with inventory pull plans for campaigns and fulfillment timelines.
- Participate in cross-functional audits, loss prevention reviews, and supplier scorecard meetings.
- Support special projects such as facility moves, SKU migrations, and pilot programs for new fulfillment models.
