An Inventory Supervisor is responsible for supervising day-to-day inventory control and stock management activities within a warehouse, distribution center, or retail environment. This role ensures inventory accuracy, optimizes stock levels to minimize stockouts and excess, leads cycle counts and physical inventories, enforces safety and compliance standards, and coaches front-line inventory staff. The Inventory Supervisor acts as the operational link between procurement, replenishment, shipping/receiving, and store or manufacturing operations, using WMS/ERP systems and inventory KPIs to drive continuous improvement and cost control.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise the daily inventory operations including receiving, put-away, picking, packing, shipping, and returns to ensure accurate flow of goods and timely order fulfillment.
  • Plan, schedule and lead regular cycle counts and full physical inventories; investigate and reconcile inventory discrepancies, root-cause issues, and implement corrective actions to improve inventory accuracy.
  • Maintain and update master data in the WMS/ERP (item records, bin locations, unit of measure, lot/serial tracking) to ensure system accuracy and traceability across the supply chain.
  • Monitor inventory KPIs (inventory accuracy, stock turns, days of inventory, shrinkage rate, fill rate) and generate weekly/monthly reports with actionable insights to operations leadership.
  • Coordinate with purchasing, demand planning, and suppliers to optimize reorder points, safety stock, lead times, and replenishment strategies that minimize stockouts and reduce excess inventory.
  • Supervise, train, and coach a team of inventory technicians, warehouse associates, and temporary staff; conduct performance reviews, set objectives, and manage scheduling and time-off to meet operational demand.
  • Implement and enforce inventory control policies, SOPs, and quality assurance standards (FIFO/LIFO, lot control, expiry date rotation) to reduce loss, product damage, and obsolescence.
  • Oversee inbound receiving processes: verify shipments, inspect for damage, reconcile packing lists against purchase orders, and coordinate vendor claims or returns when necessary.
  • Control outbound shipping accuracy through order verification, packing checks, and carrier coordination to minimize shipping errors and expedite claims handling.
  • Manage cycle count programs by establishing count schedules, assigning counters, validating results, and tracking reconciliation progress until resolved.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for recurring inventory variances; lead cross-functional corrective action plans involving procurement, operations, and quality teams.
  • Drive warehouse layout optimization, slotting and bin location strategies to improve picking efficiency, reduce travel time, and increase throughput.
  • Administer and enforce safety, security, and regulatory compliance (OSHA, DOT, FDA when applicable) across inventory operations and during audits.
  • Oversee management of damaged, expired, or quarantined inventory including documentation, segregation, disposal processes, and accounting adjustments.
  • Author and update SOPs, training materials, and process maps related to inventory transactions, cycle counts, and warehouse handling.
  • Manage vendor-managed inventory relationships and coordinate vendor shipments, audits, and reconciliation activities to maintain accuracy and service levels.
  • Support system upgrades and WMS/ERP implementations by providing functional requirements, testing inventory-related transactions, and training end users.
  • Reconcile inventory variances in collaboration with finance/accounting to support month-end and year-end inventory closing procedures.
  • Forecast near-term inventory needs for promotions, seasonal demand spikes, and new product introductions in coordination with merchandising and planning teams.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, 5S, Kaizen) in the warehouse to increase productivity, reduce waste, and improve inventory integrity.
  • Maintain accurate cycle count logs, inventory adjustment documentation, and audit-ready records for internal and external inspections.
  • Coordinate cross-dock and expedited shipment activities to meet critical customer delivery requirements and minimize expedited freight costs.
  • Monitor and control inventory holding costs and help develop inventory reduction plans without impacting service levels.
  • Liaise with stores, manufacturing, or e-commerce teams to resolve stock discrepancies, backorders, and transfer requests while preserving accurate location balances.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc inventory reporting requests and develop custom Excel dashboards or SQL queries for business stakeholders.
  • Assist in ERP/WMS projects by validating inventory workflows, supporting UAT (user acceptance testing), and documenting business processes.
  • Participate in procurement and supplier performance reviews to align inventory control practices and reduce lead-time variability.
  • Provide input to annual inventory budget planning, headcount projections, and capital requirements for material handling equipment.
  • Train and mentor junior inventory staff on best practices for accuracy, safety, and system transactions.
  • Help coordinate temporary labor sourcing and onboarding during seasonal peak periods and special projects.
  • Facilitate cross-functional meetings between operations, planning, quality, and finance to resolve stewardship and accounting issues.
  • Assist with audits from internal, external or regulatory bodies by preparing documentation, guiding auditors through processes, and implementing recommended corrective actions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Inventory management and control (cycle counting, physical inventory, reconciliation, adjustments).
  • Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and ERP proficiency — experience with SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Manhattan, Infor, or similar.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills (VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, pivot tables, INDEX+MATCH, conditional formatting) and comfort building reports.
  • Familiarity with barcode/RFID systems, scanners, and label printing workflows.
  • Knowledge of inventory valuation methods (FIFO, LIFO, weighted average) and impact on financial reporting.
  • Experience with demand planning and replenishment concepts (reorder points, safety stock, lead time management).
  • Data analysis and KPI tracking — ability to interpret inventory metrics and present recommendations.
  • Experience with shipping/receiving processes, ASN handling, and coordination with carriers.
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance requirements (OSHA, DOT, FDA, GMP) where applicable.
  • Experience implementing process improvements using Lean, 5S, Kaizen, or continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Familiarity with returns management (reverse logistics) and disposition workflows for damaged or expired goods.
  • Basic SQL or querying capability (preferred) for ad-hoc inventory data pulls and validation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Preferred Education:
