Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform daily, weekly and monthly cleaning and descaling of steam irons, heated plates, pressing heads, and surrounding machine surfaces using approved solvents, descalers and cleaning agents to prevent fabric staining and maintain consistent heat transfer.
- Inspect ironing and pressing equipment before each shift for carbon build-up, scale, residue and mechanical wear; document findings and escalate issues to maintenance when detected to avoid production delays.
- Operate industrial cleaning equipment such as steam cleaners, pressure washers, scrapers and ultrasonic cleaners safely and efficiently to remove adhesives, starch buildup and burnt fabric residue from iron surfaces.
- Follow chemical safety protocols and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) instructions when mixing, applying and disposing of cleaning agents; maintain accurate logs of chemical usage and storage conditions.
- Execute preventive maintenance tasks on irons and pressing machinery—lubricating hinges, tightening fasteners, replacing worn seals and gaskets—to extend equipment life and reduce unscheduled downtime.
- Calibrate temperature controls and verify heat distribution on ironing plates to ensure consistent pressing quality across batches; report and log temperature variances according to SOPs.
- Perform targeted stain removal and spot-cleaning on pressing surfaces and consoles to eliminate contamination that could transfer to finished garments.
- Clean and maintain condensate traps, steam lines, filters and vents associated with ironing equipment to ensure safe steam generation and prevent scale-related failures.
- Remove and replace iron plate covers, silicone pads and protective films in accordance with manufacturer instructions, ensuring correct fitting and alignment to preserve product quality.
- Coordinate with production supervisors to schedule deep-cleaning operations during low-production windows to minimize disruption to pressing and finishing schedules.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and sanitation records, including cleaning checklists, maintenance requests and completion reports to support quality audits and regulatory inspections.
- Train new team members on cleaning protocols, PPE usage, correct handling of chemicals and safe operation of cleaning tools and equipment to ensure consistent quality and safety standards.
- Monitor environmental conditions in the pressing/ironing area—humidity, dust and airborne particles—and implement cleaning measures to reduce contamination risk on delicate fabrics.
- Use approved test methods to assess iron surface contamination and verify cleaning effectiveness; re-clean or escalate items that fail quality checks.
- Dispose of contaminated rags, spent solvents and chemical waste per environmental and company policies, ensuring proper labeling, storage, and handoff to waste management services.
- Assist maintenance teams by providing observations and preliminary troubleshooting of minor mechanical issues (e.g., erratic heating, uneven pressure) to expedite repairs.
- Implement and follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) and other safety procedures during major cleaning or repair tasks to ensure personal and team safety.
- Maintain stock levels of cleaning supplies, replacement pads, seals and PPE; initiate purchase requests and help manage inventory rotation to avoid shortages.
- Conduct routine visual and tactile inspections of finished garments or linens for marks, shine or damage attributable to iron surfaces and report quality incidents with supporting details (batch, machine, time).
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives—propose process changes, cleaning product substitutions or scheduling adjustments—to reduce rework, minimize costs and improve pressing quality.
- Ensure work area housekeeping is maintained: sweep, mop, remove lint and residue, and maintain designated waste and storage zones for a compliant and safe workspace.
- Support shift handovers by providing clear status reports on equipment cleanliness, outstanding maintenance, and any quality risks to incoming teams.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in basic mechanical servicing such as replacing simple wear parts (gaskets, seals, heating elements under guidance) to reduce minor downtime.
- Support product quality teams during audits by providing cleaning logs, training records and evidence of sanitation compliance.
- Participate in cross-functional troubleshooting with production and quality teams to identify recurring contamination sources and recommend corrective actions.
- Help implement new cleaning technologies, chemicals or tooling trials by providing feedback on performance and practicality in live production settings.
- Contribute to workplace safety programs by suggesting ergonomic improvements and safe handling techniques for heavy or awkward equipment.
- Provide backup coverage for general laundry or finishing tasks—folding, sorting, or loading—during peak demand periods.
- Assist in documenting and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and cleaning checklists based on observed process changes or equipment upgrades.
- Support energy and water conservation efforts by following best practices for efficient steam and water use during cleaning cycles.
