Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Read, interpret and apply structural and mechanical blueprints, shop drawings, welding symbols, and engineering specifications to plan, lay out, and execute the fit-up and assembly of structural steel, frames, railings, ladders, platforms, and equipment bases with precision.
- Measure, mark, cut, bevel and shape steel components using oxy-fuel, plasma and abrasive cutting tools, power saws and hand tools to prepare parts for accurate fit-up and welding according to drawings and tolerances.
- Perform fit-up and alignment of beams, columns, plates and assemblies using clamps, jacks, pry bars, chainfalls, turnbuckles and torque wrenches, and record alignment and dimension checks to ensure assemblies meet specified tolerances.
- Tack-weld, grind and prepare joints for welding and collaborate with certified welders to ensure weld sequence and heat input minimize distortion and meet quality standards and welding procedure specifications.
- Install and bolt structural members using proper bolting techniques, torque procedures, and stud installation; inspect and verify bolt thread engagement, torque values, and use of locknuts or washers as required.
- Operate and maintain hoisting and rigging equipment (cranes, chain hoists, slings, shackles, spreader bars) to safely lift, maneuver and set steel assemblies in place, following rigging plans and safe lifting practices.
- Fabricate small structural components and repair parts in the shop using layout tools, shears, press brakes, drill presses and fit-up fixtures; ensure parts are produced to drawing tolerances and ready for field installation.
- Execute field erection tasks including setting base plates, anchoring systems, grout application, and final leveling and bolting of erected structures while coordinating with concrete, mechanical and electrical trades on site.
- Conduct pre-installation checks and coordinate with quality control and inspectors to ensure materials, welds and assemblies comply with AWS, ASME and project-specific standards; participate in visual and dimensional inspections.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, weld maps, heat numbers, material traceability records, and non-conformance reports; communicate status and delays to crew lead and project management.
- Perform layout and stenciling of connection locations, hole patterns and welds using transit, laser levels, layout lines, squares, spirit levels and tape measures to transfer shop dimensions to field conditions.
- Troubleshoot fit-up issues on site by modifying components, preparing site-specific splices, or fabricating supplemental plates and stiffeners to achieve required geometry and strength.
- Perform preventative maintenance and basic repairs on hand tools, power tools, rigging gear, and lifting equipment; tag out defective equipment and coordinate replacements to minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with welders, pipefitters and other trades to sequence work for safe access, temporary bracing, and efficient completion of complex assemblies and connections on congested worksites.
- Apply coating, galvanizing touch-up, and surface preparation techniques when required to protect steel prior to shipping or final handover; follow MRO and painting specifications.
- Participate in daily safety briefs, hazard assessments and toolbox talks; enforce and adhere to fall protection, confined space and hot work procedures and ensure PPE use by the crew.
- Lift, position and secure heavy plates and sections using mechanical advantage tools and team lifting techniques while observing ergonomic and manual handling practices to reduce injury risk.
- Use basic welding skills (SMAW/MIG/TIG) to make temporary or final welds when certified, including grinding and finishing of welds to meet visual acceptance criteria and tolerances.
- Coordinate material staging, offloading and protection at the jobsite, verify received material against manifests, and report damaged or missing items to procurement or site management.
- Mentor apprentices and junior fitters by demonstrating layout, fit-up and safe rigging techniques, offering on-the-job instruction and supporting formal apprenticeship training requirements.
- Implement and document corrective actions for fit, fabrication or installation non-conformances, working with engineering and QA to resolve issues and prevent reoccurrence on schedule-sensitive projects.
- Follow environmental, health and safety regulations and maintain a clean, organized work area, ensuring proper disposal of scrap, used cutting fluids and hazardous materials.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in material take-offs, simple estimating tasks and communicate material shortfalls to purchasing to support project scheduling and budgets.
- Support site housekeeping, logistics and temporary works (scaffolding, shoring, bracing) to facilitate safe access and continued erection progress.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities by suggesting process changes, tool purchases or layout methods that increase productivity and reduce rework.
- Attend pre-construction and coordination meetings to clarify scope, sequencing and access requirements and review as-built conditions that affect fit-up and installation.
- Complete training modules and maintain certifications such as fall protection, rigging, WHMIS/HAZCOM, hot work, and site-specific safety orientations.
- Assist quality inspectors with non-destructive testing setups (mag particle, dye penetrant) and prepare weld joints for inspection as directed.
- Support emergency response and assist in incident investigations by providing factual accounts and recommending preventive changes to procedures.
- Track and report tool and consumable usage, request inventories replenishment and organize tool crib to ensure crews have required equipment for upcoming tasks.
- Aid maintenance teams with overhaul tasks, heavy equipment disassembly/reassembly and alignment checks during planned shutdowns or turnaround activities.
- Provide input to shop drawing revisions based on field conditions and help update as-built documentation and redlines for handover packages.

Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED); demonstrated trade experience or completion of entry-level trade courses.
Preferred Education:
- Completion of an Ironworker or Structural Steel Fitter apprenticeship program, journeyman certification, or relevant trade school diploma.
- Additional certifications such as Red Seal (Canada), NCCER, or recognized journeyman credentials are a strong advantage.
