Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate, monitor and control irradiation equipment (gamma irradiators, electron beam (e-beam) accelerators, and X-ray systems) to meet production schedules while ensuring strict compliance with safety and manufacturer procedures.
- Plan and execute irradiation runs including loading/unloading of product, verification of product configuration, and sequencing of batches to achieve target sterilization or material modification doses.
- Perform and document dose mapping, dose distribution analysis and routine dosimetry (both routine and verification dosimetry) using calibrated dosimeters, TLDs, alanine, or radiochromic film to confirm absorbed dose and process uniformity.
- Design, develop and execute sterilization and irradiation process validations and periodic revalidations per ISO 11137, 21 CFR, and internal quality systems, including establishing SAL (Sterility Assurance Level) where applicable.
- Maintain and calibrate radiation monitoring instruments, dose calibrators, survey meters, and process control sensors; coordinate with metrology/calibration vendors and maintain calibration records.
- Implement and enforce radiation protection programs (ALARA principles), including access control, signage, PPE, air/waste monitoring, and environmental release procedures.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose and perform first-line maintenance on irradiator systems; document equipment anomalies and coordinate preventative maintenance with engineering teams.
- Generate, review and maintain controlled documentation: SOPs, batch records, validation protocols, qualification reports (IQ/OQ/PQ), deviation reports, CAPAs and change control records.
- Conduct routine environmental and radiological surveys; log exposure records and maintain personnel dosimetry programs, ensuring compliance with regulatory dose limits.
- Review product packaging and fixturing designs to ensure dose uniformity and thermal/mechanical compatibility during irradiation; collaborate with packaging engineering to optimize throughput and dose delivery.
- Work with Quality Assurance to review and disposition non-conforming product, manage recalls or customer notifications related to irradiation processes, and participate in root cause investigations.
- Lead or support regulatory inspections and audits (FDA, USDA, NRC, state radiological authorities) by preparing documentation, coordinating responses and demonstrating compliant processes.
- Train and mentor new operators, production staff and cross-functional teams on safe irradiator operation, emergency procedures, radiation safety, and process documentation requirements.
- Coordinate sample handling, chain of custody and shipping/receiving logistics for incoming/outgoing irradiated product, including compliance with hazardous materials and radiation transport regulations.
- Develop and implement process improvements to increase throughput, improve dose uniformity, reduce costs and enhance operational safety using data-driven approaches.
- Perform risk assessments (FMEA) for irradiation processes and contribute to health and safety assessments, environmental monitoring plans and waste management strategies.
- Monitor process performance metrics (yield, dose variance, downtime) and prepare operational and compliance reports for management and customers.
- Collaborate with R&D, product development and external customers on experimental irradiation studies, feasibility testing, and scale-up of new sterilization or material modification methods.
- Ensure all sources, sealed or unsealed, are securely managed, inventoried and tracked according to license requirements and company policy.
- Prepare technical reports, dose certificates and customer documentation including technical summaries that explain irradiation parameters, dose evidence and validation outcomes.
- Respond to and manage radiation-related incidents and near-misses, execute emergency procedures, document investigations and implement corrective actions.
Secondary Functions
- Support cross-functional teams with radiation-related data requests and ad-hoc analysis, delivering actionable insights for production and quality decisions.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
