  • Perform regular preventative maintenance inspections on pumps, backflow preventers, pressure regulators and filtration systems; service and replace worn or damaged components to maintain reliability.
  • Conduct irrigation audits and water-use assessments to identify inefficiencies, recommend retrofits (e.g., high-efficiency nozzles, pressure regulators, smart controllers) and implement corrective measures.
  • Replace, realign and adjust spray and rotary sprinkler heads and drip emitters for uniform coverage, correct precipitation rates and to prevent overspray on pavements or buildings.
  • Test and maintain backflow prevention assemblies in accordance with local codes, complete required certifications and ensure records are current for compliance inspections.
  • Operate trenching and excavation equipment safely to run new irrigation lines, repair damaged mains or replace valves; backfill and restore turf or planting beds after work is completed.
  • Read and interpret irrigation plans, piping schematics and as-built drawings; mark utility locations and coordinate with utility companies and site supervisors prior to excavation.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, service logs and inventory records in mobile or desktop systems; document parts used, repairs completed and recommendations for future work.
  • Respond to emergency repair calls for broken mains, pump failures and major leaks with rapid assessment, temporary mitigation and permanent repair as needed.
  • Coordinate with landscape architects, property managers, superintendents and clients to schedule service windows, present repair options and explain recommended maintenance procedures.
  • Calibrate and maintain pressure and flow measurement tools, moisture sensors and onsite testing equipment to ensure accurate diagnostics and effective system adjustments.
  • Install, test and maintain irrigation pump stations, including motor starters, pressure switches, control wiring and routine lubrication as required.
  • Assist in inventory management by tracking parts, replacement heads, controllers and specialty fittings; reorder supplies proactively to minimize downtime and service delays.
  • Follow all company safety protocols and OSHA or local safety regulations, including trench safety, lockout/tagout, PPE use and hazard communication when working with electrical components and chemicals.
  • Train and mentor junior crew members and seasonal staff on proper installation techniques, safe use of tools, controller programming and best practices for water conservation.
  • Perform seasonal start-up and winterization procedures, including system blowouts, valve isolation, and frost protection measures to prevent freeze damage and ensure long-term reliability.
  • Maintain clean, organized service vehicles and tool inventory; ensure all vehicles are stocked with common replacement parts and safety equipment for efficient field response.
  • Monitor irrigation system performance after repairs or adjustments and follow up to verify successful resolution and client satisfaction.
  • Assist with small landscape repairs related to irrigation work, such as turf repair, soil compaction alleviation and minor grading to restore proper drainage patterns.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, offering feedback on parts, equipment performance and procedural changes to increase system uptime and reduce call-backs.
  • Ensure compliance with water-use regulations, municipal irrigation bylaws and environmental best practices, providing documentation and support during compliance inspections.
  • Maintain professional communication with customers and internal stakeholders, preparing clear service reports, recommendations and estimates for additional work.

Secondary Functions

  • Support inventory and procurement by identifying frequently used parts and recommending cost-effective alternatives to suppliers and purchasing teams.
  • Assist with simple site surveys and data collection for irrigation design teams, including measuring zones, recording valve locations and photographing current conditions.
  • Help coordinate subcontractors and specialty trades (electricians, plumbers) for complex pump station or electrical control panel repairs.
  • Participate in cross-training opportunities to support related landscape maintenance tasks and to expand technical proficiency in irrigation technologies.
  • Contribute to seasonal planning by providing input on irrigation schedules, startup/winterization timelines and supply needs based on historical site performance.
