Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead end-to-end irrigation design projects: perform site inspections, client needs assessment, soil and topography analysis, develop irrigation plans and details using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or GIS, and produce complete construction drawings and specifications for drip, micro, rotor and spray systems.

- Perform hydraulic calculations and pipe sizing across multi-zone irrigation systems; select pumps, filters, valves and controllers based on system demand, friction loss calculations, and manufacturer specifications to ensure reliable performance.
- Develop irrigation schedules and ET-based watering plans using evapotranspiration data, soil moisture profiles, crop coefficients and local climate data to optimize water application, reduce runoff and improve plant health.
- Specify and design control systems and automation including smart irrigation controllers, soil moisture sensors, flow sensors, and telemetry/SCADA integration for remote monitoring and automated scheduling.
- Create detailed bill of materials, equipment lists and cost estimates for tendering, procurement and budgeting; prepare specifications for materials, manufacturers and installation best practices aligned with client objectives.
- Lead construction administration and commissioning: oversee installation, manage contractors on-site, perform start-up checks, calibrate controllers and sensors, execute zone-by-zone performance testing and provide acceptance sign-off documentation.
- Prepare and deliver clear, client-facing technical reports and proposals including design narratives, ROI/water savings estimates, maintenance plans, phased implementation strategies and recommended upgrades for reclaimed water or rainwater harvesting systems.
- Provide technical due diligence and feasibility studies for new development and retrofit projects, including reviewing plans, identifying water supply constraints, pressure zones, and proposing risk mitigation and regulatory compliance strategies.
- Advise on sustainable irrigation and water conservation strategies such as drought-tolerant species selection, soil amendments, mulching, rainwater capture, greywater reuse, and smart irrigation technologies to meet LEED/Green Star or local conservation program requirements.
- Implement quality assurance and commissioning checklists to ensure system performance meets design intent, oversee punch lists, validate flow rates and uniformity, and coordinate warranty and post-installation follow-up.
- Manage multi-stakeholder communications: coordinate with landscape architects, civil engineers, planners, municipalities and utility providers to ensure integration of irrigation infrastructure with drainage, grading and landscape design.
- Design irrigation systems for reclaimed water and alternative sources: develop cross-connection prevention plans, specify backflow prevention assemblies, and ensure compliance with local reclaimed water codes and salt tolerance practices.
- Use GIS and mapping tools to record as-built irrigation layouts, meter locations, pressure zones and asset inventories to support long-term maintenance, GIS asset management and water accounting.
- Provide training and capacity building for maintenance crews and clients on proper operation, seasonal scheduling, controller programming, basic troubleshooting and preventative maintenance to extend system life and performance.
- Perform irrigation system troubleshooting and diagnostics: locate leaks, identify pressure imbalances, diagnose clogging or emitter failure, and implement corrective measures including nozzle selection and filter maintenance.
- Lead pilot programs and performance monitoring: design monitoring plans, install flow and moisture monitoring equipment, analyze time-series data to measure system performance, and iterate on scheduling and hardware for continuous improvement.
- Prepare regulatory permit applications and documentation where required (e.g., water use permits, stormwater integration), and liaise with local authorities to ensure legal compliance and facilitate approvals.
- Create and manage project schedules and budgets: track milestones, manage subcontractor scopes, control costs, and report progress to clients and internal stakeholders to meet delivery timelines.
- Produce specification packages and tender documents for procurement: include performance criteria, manufacturer acceptable lists, installation standards and testing requirements to ensure quality vendor responses.
- Lead sustainability and grant-writing efforts where relevant: support clients in securing rebates, water conservation grants or incentive programs by preparing technical justification, water savings calculations and cost estimates.
