The Irrigation Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting irrigation and water distribution systems including pumps, gates, valves, siphons, sprinkler and drip systems, and telemetry/SCADA equipment. This role ensures timely water delivery to agricultural, municipal, or industrial customers while complying with regulatory and environmental standards, executing preventive maintenance, monitoring flow and pressure, and responding to operational incidents and customer requests.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and monitor irrigation pumps, pumping stations, and associated electrical and mechanical equipment to maintain scheduled water deliveries, adjusting flow and pressure to meet irrigation plans and customer requirements.
  • Control and inspect canal gates, valves, weirs, siphons and pressure-regulating devices to direct water flows safely and prevent spills, erosion or shortages according to distribution schedules and water rights.
  • Use SCADA, PLCs, telemetry systems and flow/pressure sensors to monitor system performance in real time, interpret alarms, log readings, and initiate corrective actions to restore normal operations.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on pumps, motors, diesel engines, gearboxes, bearings, piping, hydrants and valves including lubrication, filter changes, belt adjustments and minor repairs to maximize uptime.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic and electrical failures—diagnosing faulty components, performing field repairs or coordinating with specialized technicians and contractors as needed to minimize service interruptions.
  • Conduct daily inspections of canals, pipelines, laterals and open ditches to identify leaks, sediment build-up, animal damage, vegetation encroachment, or structural damage and take corrective action or report to supervisor.
  • Calibrate, test and validate flow meters, pressure transducers and telemetry equipment, and maintain accurate calibration records to ensure reliable measurement for billing and regulatory reporting.
  • Execute scheduled flushing, de-silting and sediment removal activities in open channels and intake structures to maintain design capacity and minimize blockages in the distribution network.
  • Read, interpret and implement irrigation schedules, water allocation orders and rotation lists; communicate changes and confirm deliveries with growers, site managers and contractors.
  • Maintain detailed logs and electronic records of daily operations, maintenance activities, water deliveries, pump run-times, fuel and parts usage, and incident reports for regulatory compliance and operational analytics.
  • Respond to customer service requests and emergency calls (e.g., leaks, flooded fields, equipment failures) with tact and speed, providing status updates and working until the issue is resolved or transferred to appropriate personnel.
  • Monitor and manage fuel, oil, spare parts, and maintenance supplies inventory, place orders and coordinate with procurement to ensure critical spares are available for fast repairs.
  • Perform basic welding, fabrication, pipe fitting and mechanical assembly to install or repair gates, stands, flanges and structural components as required by field conditions.
  • Assist in start-up and shutdown procedures for seasonal systems, including winterization and spring commissioning, ensuring proper isolation, draining and preservation of equipment to prevent freeze damage.
  • Support safety programs by enforcing lockout/tagout, confined space entry procedures, PPE usage, and by conducting job hazard analyses prior to maintenance or construction tasks.
  • Operate tractors, backhoes, skid steers and light construction equipment safely when required for installation, repair or right-of-way maintenance around irrigation infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with environmental, regulatory and water rights personnel to ensure operations are compliant with permits, instream flow requirements and water conservation directives.
  • Implement water conservation best practices such as scheduling optimization, leak detection programs and efficiency upgrades; document water savings and make recommendations for system improvements.
  • Participate in capital improvement projects by providing field-level insights, assisting contractors during installations, conducting site surveys and verifying as-built conditions.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to junior operators and seasonal staff, demonstrating safe operation procedures, equipment maintenance techniques and system monitoring best practices.
  • Manage non-routine tasks like emergency bypassing, temporary pumping installations, and establishing alternative conveyance routes during infrastructure repairs or natural disasters.
  • Prepare and submit accurate daily, weekly and monthly reports (digital or paper) summarizing system status, maintenance completed, incidents and resource usage for management review.

Secondary Functions

  • Support irrigation planning by supplying historical run-time and flow data for optimization projects and drought contingency planning.
  • Assist the maintenance planner in creating and updating preventive maintenance schedules and CMMS entries based on field observations and equipment condition.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings with agronomy, engineering and customer service teams to align water deliveries with crop requirements and service agreements.
  • Help maintain GIS and asset management records by updating location, condition and configuration data after repairs or installations.
  • Contribute to vendor evaluations and equipment performance testing during procurement of pumps, valves and telemetry components.
  • Support environmental monitoring tasks such as water quality sampling, turbidity checks and basic laboratory data logging when required by permits.
  • Provide input into budget requests by forecasting parts, fuel, and labor needs based on historical usage and upcoming capital/maintenance projects.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness drills and assist in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce downtime and increase operational resilience.
  • Offer field-level recommendations for automation, telemetry expansion, and sensor placement to improve remote monitoring and control capabilities.
  • Assist in public outreach by representing operations during farm visits, site tours, or community meetings when requested by management.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Operation of irrigation pumps, pumping stations, valves, gates and canal systems with hands-on experience in flow and pressure control.
  • SCADA/PLC/Telemetry operation and basic troubleshooting, including interpreting alarms, trending and remote control of equipment.
  • Mechanical diagnostics and repair skills for pumps, diesel engines, electric motors, gearboxes, bearings and seals.
  • Electrical troubleshooting for motor starters, control panels, wiring, relays, fuses and basic motor controls (knowledge of 120V–480V systems).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; equivalent combination of education and field experience accepted.
