Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform full-cycle installation of new irrigation systems, including trenching, pipe layout, fitting PVC/PE piping, installing valves, sprinklers, emitters, and controllers according to plans and local codes.
  • Diagnose and repair leaks, broken heads, cracked pipes, stuck valves, and electrical faults using industry-standard tools and testing equipment to restore system operation quickly.
  • Program, test, and optimize irrigation controllers (clock timers and smart controllers) for efficient schedules based on plant type, soil conditions, site exposure, and local watering restrictions.
  • Conduct comprehensive system audits and water-use assessments to identify inefficiencies, misaligned heads, broken nozzles, pressure issues, and opportunities for retrofit with high-efficiency components.
  • Install and maintain drip irrigation and micro-irrigation systems for planting beds, trees, and shrubs, including emitters, tubing, pressure regulators, and filtration systems.
  • Perform seasonal start-up and winterization services, including blowouts with compressed air, drain procedures, and system shutdowns to prevent freeze damage and maintain warranty compliance.
  • Test, maintain, and repair backflow prevention assemblies and pressure vacuum breakers; coordinate with certified backflow testers and ensure documentation meets municipal requirements.
  • Troubleshoot pump stations, control valves, solenoids, and booster pumps; perform electrical troubleshooting of solenoids, sensors, and wiring to controller terminals.
  • Read and interpret irrigation blueprints, landscape plans, site maps, and As-Built drawings; perform layout and stakeout to ensure correct valve and head placement.
  • Install, maintain, and calibrate moisture sensors, rain sensors, flow sensors, and soil probes; integrate sensor data into controller schedules to reduce water waste.
  • Coordinate with landscape architects, property managers, and contractors to ensure irrigation systems meet project scopes, budgets, and timelines.
  • Replace and upgrade old or inefficient components (nozzles, heads, valves) to improve uniformity of coverage while tracking parts, labor, and materials for accurate job costing.
  • Inspect and maintain fuel-powered and electric-powered equipment (trenchers, compactors, saws) safely and according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate service records, perform digital documentation of repairs and installations in CMMS or CRM systems, and produce clear reports for clients and supervisors.
  • Provide on-site customer communication and education, explaining irrigation issues, recommended repairs, and water-saving options to homeowners and property managers.
  • Ensure all on-site work complies with local water regulations, building codes, and environmental standards, and obtain permits when required.
  • Manage inventory of irrigation parts and supplies, order replacements, and track usage to minimize downtime and overstock.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians and apprentices in safe excavation practices, proper pipe joining techniques, controller programming, and system troubleshooting.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections and seasonal service contracts, including scheduled checks of valves, filters, and system performance metrics.
  • Respond to emergency service calls for broken mains, flooding, or significant system failures, prioritize public safety, and coordinate rapid repairs to limit landscape damage.
  • Calibrate and verify system pressure using gauges and pressure regulators; perform hydraulic analysis when needed to correct pressure imbalance and ensure proper emitter function.
  • Implement water conservation upgrades such as high-efficiency nozzles, smart controllers, rain/freeze sensors, and emission-based irrigation to reduce water usage and operational costs.
  • Follow safety protocols for excavation (locating underground utilities), chemical handling (if applicable), confined space entry, and heavy equipment operation to prevent accidents.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Certifications such as Certified Irrigation Technician (CIT), Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor (CLIA), or state-level contractor licenses are a plus.
