An IT Installer (also called Installation Technician or Field Installer) is a hands-on technical specialist responsible for the physical deployment, configuration, testing, and handover of IT infrastructure at customer sites. The role covers structured network cabling (copper and fiber), rack and server installation, network device mounting and configuration, wireless access point and CCTV/VoIP system installs, site surveys, and on-site troubleshooting. The IT Installer ensures installations meet design specifications, safety and code requirements, project timelines and service level agreements (SLAs), and provides clear documentation and customer training at handover.
This role is field-facing and requires strong technical competence in cabling standards (TIA/EIA), fiber termination and testing, network hardware basics (switches, routers, firewalls, wireless APs, VoIP phones), and the ability to read plans/blueprints. Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform end-to-end on-site installation of structured cabling systems (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, Cat7) including cable pulling, termination, labeling, and patch panel population while following TIA/EIA standards and job-specific wiring diagrams.
- Conduct fiber optic installation tasks such as single-mode and multimode fiber pulling, stripping, termination (connector installation), fusion splicing, and mechanical splicing, ensuring adherence to fiber handling best practices.
- Execute comprehensive site surveys and pre-installation assessments to verify site readiness, measure cable runs, verify mounting locations, and identify potential obstacles to planned installations.
- Rack, mount, and cable network equipment, servers, switches, routers, UPS units, PDUs, and patch panels; ensure professional cable management, appropriate airflow, and secure physical mounting per site and vendor requirements.
- Install and configure wireless access points (indoor/outdoor), verify signal coverage, perform basic on-site Wi‑Fi troubleshooting, and document AP locations and mounting details.
- Install, configure, and test IP telephony equipment including VoIP phones, analog gateways, and related infrastructure; assist with basic phone provisioning and network QoS verification for voice services.
- Mount and integrate CCTV cameras, NVR/DVR units, and related security infrastructure, perform camera alignment, video verification, and secure cabling connections to ensure system functionality.
- Configure basic network device settings on-site (IP addressing, VLAN assignments, default gateway), collaborate with remote network engineers for complex configurations, and verify connectivity with ping/traceroute and other diagnostic tools.
- Perform power and grounding installations for racks and devices, test UPS operation, replace failed batteries, and coordinate lifts/crane work for large equipment where required.
- Use industry-standard test equipment (OTDRs, power meters, cable certifiers, Fluke testers) to certify copper and fiber cable performance, record test results, and produce test reports that meet client acceptance criteria.
- Troubleshoot and resolve on-site installation issues, including cable faults, connectivity problems, hardware failures, and environmental constraints, escalating to engineering teams as needed and documenting resolutions.
- Ensure compliance with local building codes, electrical codes, site safety standards (OSHA), and customer-specific safety policies while performing physical installations and working at heights.
- Coordinate with project managers, subcontractors, electricians, and client site contacts to sequence work, manage dependencies, and meet project timelines and milestone targets.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of as-built drawings, cable labeling, port mapping, device inventory, and installation checklists using client portals or company ticketing/CMDB systems.
- Provide customer-facing handover and working demonstrations, including basic user training, explanation of system operation, and written confirmation of acceptance and sign-off where required.
- Manage inventory of installation materials, consumables, and tools; report shortages, requisition parts, and ensure secure handling of customer equipment on site.
- Adhere to quality control processes by performing pre-handover acceptance testing, verifying SLA criteria, capturing photographic evidence of installs, and correcting deficiencies prior to client sign-off.
- Schedule and perform post-installation site visits for punch-list items, warranty checks, firmware updates, and minor configuration tweaks to ensure long-term system reliability.
- Respond to on-call or emergency installation and recovery requests for network outages, site relocations, or disaster recovery tasks with rapid mobilization to restore services.
- Implement cable management best practices including labeling, bundling, Velcro use (no zip ties on bundles), and routing to maintain serviceability, airflow, and professional appearance of installed infrastructure.
- Ensure all installation work is compliant with customer security policies, asset tagging procedures, and confidentiality requirements for on-site access to sensitive equipment or areas.
- Safely operate company vehicles, lifts, ladders, and manual handling equipment while transporting tools and hardware to and from installation sites; follow vehicle and tool inspection protocols.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities by providing field feedback on installation methods, test procedures, common failure modes, and suggestions for standardization and efficiency gains.
