Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Carefully examine incoming jade rough and finished cabochons for cracks, inclusions, translucency, color zoning and stability to determine the optimal orientation and setting method for each piece of jewelry.
- Advise design and production teams on viable setting approaches for jade (bezel, prong, channel, flush, tension-style adaptations), balancing aesthetic goals with the physical properties of jade to prevent chipping or fracture.
- Accurately measure stones, seats and metal thickness using calipers, microscopes and gauges, and lay out precise stone seats to manufacturer tolerances before any metal manipulation takes place.
- Perform delicate bezel forming, raising and burnishing techniques on gold, silver and platinum mountings specifically adapted for jade’s hardness and cleavage, using hammers, pliers, files and burnishers.
- Set cabochon jade securely using hand-setting techniques that maintain even pressure around the stone, avoiding over-tightening or localized stress that could cause fractures.
- Prepare and shape custom settings for non-standard jade shapes and freeform carvings, including fabrication of custom bezels, clips and supportive backings to protect fragile areas.
- Repair and re-seat loose jade stones from returned merchandise and legacy pieces, documenting root causes (wear, impact, solder defects) and recommending corrective process adjustments.
- Collaborate with in-house gemologists and external labs to confirm jade type (nephrite, jadeite), treatments (dying, impregnation), and any special handling or disclosure requirements prior to setting.
- Use microscopes and magnification to inspect finished settings for burrs, gaps, solder seams and stone security, ensuring all work meets internal QA standards and brand finish guidelines.
- Execute micro-welding, soldering and laser welding tasks on delicate settings while protecting jade from heat damage using heat sinks, cooling protocols and specialized adhesives where appropriate.
- Document setting procedures, production notes and quality control observations in manufacturing systems to ensure traceability and continuous improvement for jade line items.
- Mentor and train junior setters and apprentices on jade-specific techniques, including proper seating, pressure control, and emergency protocols when a stone shows stress lines or fissures.
- Communicate with jewelry designers to propose alternate mounting methods when design intent risks jade integrity, providing mockups or prototypes when needed to validate approach.
- Perform finishing operations—sanding, polishing, ultrasonic cleaning and final inspection—taking care to use jade-safe cleaning methods and non-abrasive polishing where required.
- Coordinate with procurement and stone sourcing teams to provide feedback on rough quality, recommended cutting profiles, and supplier selection criteria for jade suitable for setting.
- Maintain and calibrate bench tools and setting equipment (e.g., gravers, burs, microscopes, staking tools), and escalate tool wear issues that could impact stone security or finish quality.
- Follow all safety, handling and documentation protocols when working with stabilized or treated jade, ensuring proper disclosure to buyers and compliance with industry regulations.
- Participate in sample review and pre-production sign-off meetings to validate manufacturability of jade designs at scale, offering setting alternatives to reduce breakage and rework rates.
- Troubleshoot and repair manufacturing defects related to setting (e.g., misaligned seats, insufficient metal retention), implementing corrective actions and working with production leads to revise process steps.
- Contribute technical input for cost estimating and time studies on jade-setting operations to inform pricing, lead times and capacity planning.
- Support customization and bespoke projects that require hand-setting of carved or antique jade elements, liaising with customers when necessary to align expectations on feasibility and finish.
- Maintain a clean, organized bench area with appropriate storage for loose jade stones and in-process work to prevent loss, mixing, or accidental damage.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
- Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
- Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
- Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.
- Assist in cross-functional problem-solving sessions to address recurring production or quality issues related to stone setting workflows.
- Help evaluate and trial new setting tools, microscopes or adhesives to improve throughput while preserving jade integrity.
