Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Supervise and maintain the safety, security, custody, and welfare of inmates during assigned shifts by enforcing facility rules, monitoring inmate behavior, and applying established correctional procedures to prevent escapes, assaults, and contraband flow.
  • Conduct systematic headcounts, cell checks, and perimeter/security rounds at scheduled and unscheduled intervals to verify inmate presence and detect irregularities; accurately report and resolve count discrepancies according to policy.
  • Perform intake processing including identification verification, fingerprinting, photographing, medical screening, classification, and orientation to facility rules and programs; create and maintain accurate intake records in the records management system.

  • Monitor and operate surveillance equipment (CCTV), door control systems, alarm systems, intercoms, and other security technology to observe inmate activity, manage movement, and coordinate with control room staff during incidents.
  • Escort, transport, and secure inmates for court appearances, medical appointments, inter-facility transfers, and other authorized movements—ensuring proper restraint techniques, documentation, and custody chain during transport.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to facility emergencies including fights, medical crises, suicide attempts, fires, barricades, and escape attempts; implement crisis response, de-escalation, and use-of-force protocols in accordance with agency policy and legal guidelines.
  • Provide emergency first aid, CPR, and basic medical care until medical professionals arrive; coordinate with on-site or off-site healthcare providers and document all medical incidents thoroughly.
  • Investigate alleged rule violations, inmate-on-inmate or inmate-on-staff incidents, property damage, and other infractions by interviewing inmates and witnesses, collecting evidence, writing detailed incident reports, and testifying in disciplinary hearings as required.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and professional written records, logs, and reports including incident reports, shift reports, medical referrals, use-of-force reports, disciplinary reports, and property inventories to support legal, administrative, and investigative needs.
  • Control access and egress to secured areas; verify and process visitors and contractors, check identification, enforce visitation policies, and maintain visitor logs to ensure the safety of staff, inmates, and the public.
  • Supervise inmate work details, educational and treatment programs, recreation periods, and commissary operations to ensure orderly participation, adherence to safety protocols, and prevention of misconduct.
  • Administer inmate classification and custody level assessments by gathering relevant criminal, medical, and behavioral data; recommend appropriate housing, program placement, and security measures to facility supervisors.
  • Conduct searches of incoming mail and packages in compliance with policy and legal standards; screen and process inmate property and commissary to prevent contraband introduction and loss.
  • Train, mentor, and provide on-the-job coaching for new hires, deputy jailers, and seasonal staff; contribute to shift briefings, safety training, and skills refreshers to maintain consistent operational standards.
  • Maintain and inventory security equipment, keys, restraints, radios, and chemical agent kits; report equipment failures and coordinate repairs or replacements to preserve operational readiness.
  • Implement and support facility disciplinary processes, grievance handling, and inmate classification hearings by providing factual summaries, evidence, and recommendations to supervisory staff.
  • Coordinate with mental health professionals, medical staff, and social services to identify inmates in need of behavioral health support, suicide prevention interventions, or specialized care, and document referrals and follow-up actions.
  • Enforce and document adherence to constitutional and statutory inmate rights, including appropriate use of restraints, privacy considerations during searches, and provision of required accommodations; escalate legal or civil rights concerns to supervisors.
  • Participate in and execute routine and emergency training exercises, evacuation drills, and continuity-of-operations planning to ensure staff readiness for large-scale incidents or disasters.
  • Maintain professional conduct, confidentiality, and ethical standards in all interactions with inmates, staff, legal representatives, and the public; enforce a culture of safety, respect, and rehabilitative opportunity.
  • Gather and preserve physical evidence from incidents (photographs, contraband, clothing), document chain of custody, and coordinate evidence submission to investigators or external law enforcement when required.
