Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate jar filling machines (gravity, piston, auger, or volumetric) to consistently achieve specified fill volumes and target piece rates while minimizing product giveaway.
  • Set up and changeover filling and capping lines, including tooling, nozzles, starwheels, and guides, to accommodate different jar sizes and product viscosities according to job orders and SOPs.
  • Calibrate and verify fill weights and volumes using scales and checkweighers, document results, and adjust machine settings to maintain accuracy and compliance with production specifications.
  • Monitor and control capping equipment (twist, torque, induction sealers) to ensure proper cap placement, torque specification, and seal integrity, rejecting and documenting defective closures.
  • Conduct in-line quality inspections for fill level, seal integrity, label placement, lid alignment and product appearance; quarantine off-spec product and complete corrective action paperwork.
  • Load and unload raw materials and packaging components (jars, lids, labels, cartons) and stage them to the line following FIFO and material handling best practices.
  • Follow GMP, HACCP, allergen control, and sanitation procedures continually, including wearing required PPE and maintaining clean work zones to prevent contamination.
  • Perform routine machine cleaning (CIP or manual wipe-down), sanitation, and end-of-shift breakdowns in accordance with sanitation schedules and written procedures to meet food safety standards.
  • Execute preventive maintenance tasks such as lubrication, belt and seal inspection, sensor cleaning, and basic mechanical adjustments to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Troubleshoot common mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical issues on filling and packaging equipment and work with maintenance or engineers for complex repairs.
  • Record production data accurately in logs, electronic systems, or batch records including run times, rejects, downtime reasons, shift handovers, and fill weight checks.
  • Adhere to all safety rules and plant environmental policies, participate in lockout/tagout procedures for repairs, and report hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly.
  • Maintain accurate batch and lot traceability by labeling production runs, logging lot codes, and ensuring proper segregation of samples for QC testing when requested.
  • Load and operate checkweighers, metal detectors, and vision systems; respond to equipment alarms, adjust settings, and coordinate with quality assurance to resolve detection issues.
  • Collaborate with QA/QC to pull product samples, complete sampling documentation, and support micro and chemical testing requirements when necessary.
  • Meet productivity targets while minimizing rejects and rework, practicing continuous improvement by suggesting process changes to improve yield, ergonomics, or cycle times.
  • Train and mentor new operators on standardized work, safety procedures, machine operation, and quality expectations to build team capability.
  • Execute changeovers quickly and efficiently while following documented checklists to minimize downtime and ensure consistent product output.
  • Ensure accurate labeling, date coding, and lot sequencing on finished jars and cases to meet customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in daily production meetings, line audits, and safety stand-downs, providing feedback on line performance and improvement opportunities.
  • Coordinate with warehouse and logistics to stage finished goods, palletize outputs, and prepare product for shipment while maintaining accurate counts and paperwork.
  • Maintain housekeeping around the line—remove debris and packaging waste promptly and keep aisles clear to support a safe, organized workplace.

Secondary Functions

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives (5S, Kaizen) to optimize line flow, reduce waste, and improve ergonomics on the filling line.
  • Assist in data collection for OEE, downtime tracking, and yield reporting to support production analytics and management decisions.
  • Cross-train on upstream and downstream packaging stations (labeler, case packer, shrink wrapper) to provide flexible support during high-demand periods.
  • Help coordinate minor parts ordering and spare parts inventory for frequently serviced components to minimize changeover delays.
  • Participate in new product trials and scale-up activities, offering operator feedback to engineering and R&D on machineability and process robustness.
  • Support environmental health and safety audits and corrective action follow-up to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Complete batch documentation and electronic entry of production records to support traceability and internal/external audits.
  • Act as liaison to maintenance and engineering during root cause analyses for repeated equipment failures or quality escapes.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient in operating jar filling machines (piston, gravity, volumetric, auger) and associated packaging equipment (cappers, labelers, conveyors).
  • Experience with in-line quality equipment: checkweighers, metal detectors, vision systems, and torque testers.
  • Strong knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), HACCP principles, and basic food safety regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret production orders, SOPs, work instructions, and technical diagrams.
  • Competent with measuring tools and scales; able to perform and document fill weight and volume checks.
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting: belts, bearings, pulleys, pneumatic components and basic electrical fault identification.
  • Familiarity with CIP (clean-in-place) procedures or manual sanitation processes and sanitation standard operating procedures.
  • Experience with lockout/tagout procedures and industrial safety practices (OSHA-aligned).
  • Proficient record-keeping skills (batch records, logbooks, digital MES/WMS entry) and lot traceability processes.
  • Knowledge of labeling, date-coding, and packaging compliance, including allergen segregation and labeling requirements.
  • Forklift or material handling training/certification preferred (for staging raw materials and finished goods).
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and digital production tracking systems (MES, ERP, or spreadsheets).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical diploma or certificate in Manufacturing Technology, Mechanical Maintenance, Food Science, or Packaging Technology.
  • Certifications in food safety (ServSafe, HACCP, SQF) or industrial safety (OSHA 10/30) are a plus.
