Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Visually inspect incoming and in-process jars for defects such as cracks, chips, chips in threads, contamination, foreign particles, incorrect fills, or improper sealing and promptly remove non-conforming jars from the line to maintain product quality and safety.
- Sort jars by size, color, label variant, SKU, lot number or production batch according to routing instructions and work orders, ensuring accurate segregation for downstream packing and labeling.
- Operate and monitor conveyor belts, chute guides, and vibrating tables to maintain smooth flow of jars; adjust guides and feed rates within safe operating parameters to prevent jams and minimize downtime.
- Accurately count and stage jars into totes, trays, or pallets following production quotas and packing specifications; maintain accurate counts for inventory reconciliation and production reporting.
- Apply, verify, or correct labels, shrink bands, safety seals, and date codes by hand or using handheld applicators and scanners to ensure traceability and regulatory compliance.
- Use handheld barcode scanners, mobile terminals, or simple data-entry devices to scan SKUs, record rejects, log production counts, and update inventory or WMS entries in real time.
- Follow GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), HACCP principles and company food-safety rules when handling jars that contain food or beverage products; wear and maintain required PPE such as gloves, hairnets, and safety glasses.
- Perform sampling and basic quality checks such as checking fill levels, cap torque, capping integrity, and label alignment; document quality observations and escalate trends to the quality supervisor.
- Segregate and document returned or rework jars and coordinate with the rework team or Quality Assurance for disposition, ensuring no contaminated or nonconforming product is reintroduced to the line.
- Maintain clean and organized workstations by sweeping, clearing debris, and properly disposing of broken glass or damaged packaging materials as per safety procedures to reduce hazards and contamination risk.
- Communicate throughput issues, equipment malfunctions, or quality trends to production leads, maintenance, and QA in a timely manner to support continuous improvement and fast resolution.
- Load and unload boxes, bins, trays, and pallets of jars and packaging materials using safe lifting techniques; coordinate with material handlers or forklift operators for heavy or bulk moves.
- Support setup and changeover tasks in the packaging area, including moving guides, resetting conveyors, and preparing line-specific fixtures to minimize setup time between runs.
- Meet and strive to exceed daily production targets and KPIs while maintaining high quality standards; accurately report production totals and downtime reasons at shift handovers.
- Participate in first-line troubleshooting for minor jams, misfeeds, and alignment issues on the line, making safe adjustments and notifying maintenance for mechanical repairs beyond the operator scope.
- Record temperature, hygiene, or inspection logs as required by site procedures and assist QA during audits or routine inspections by providing required records and samples.
- Train and mentor new sorters on correct sorting procedures, safety protocols, and best practices for ergonomic work to ensure consistency and reduce error rates.
- Follow lockout/tagout and confined space procedures when required and adhere to all OSHA and company safety policies while working around automated equipment and heavy pallets.
- Package sorted jars into customer-ready configurations, including tray erection, tray loading, palletizing, stretch-wrapping, and labeling for shipment as needed during peak periods.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by recommending process improvements, ergonomic adjustments, or quality checkpoints that reduce waste and increase throughput.
- Conduct visual inspections for product presentation issues, such as label wrinkles, misprints, or mismatched lids, and coordinate corrective action to maintain brand standards.
- Ensure all rejected jars are securely contained and labeled for traceability and sanitary disposal according to company and environmental procedures.
- Balance speed and accuracy to support just-in-time production schedules while maintaining strict adherence to food-safety handling and contamination-prevention procedures.
- Assist in inventory cycle counts for jars, caps, and packaging materials and report shortages or discrepancies to the warehouse or inventory control team.
