Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, implement, and iterate individualized and group training plans for javelin throwers using periodization principles to peak athletes for key competitions while managing workload and recovery.
  • Provide detailed technical instruction on javelin mechanics—grip, approach/run-up, crossover steps, withdrawal, delivery/impulse, release, and follow-through—using progressive drills and cueing tailored to each athlete.
  • Lead comprehensive warm-up and movement preparation routines that integrate dynamic mobility, neuromuscular activation, and event-specific drills to reduce injury risk and enhance performance.
  • Create and deliver strength & conditioning programs specific to javelin demands, including power development (Olympic lifts, plyometrics), rotational core strength, shoulder stability, and posterior chain conditioning.
  • Use video analysis and biomechanical feedback tools to analyze throws, identify technical inefficiencies, and produce corrective exercise prescriptions and drill progressions.
  • Plan and execute competition strategies, pre-competition routines, and mental preparation protocols; advise athletes on attempt selection, pacing, and environmental considerations (wind, runway, equipment).
  • Monitor athlete load and performance using objective metrics (GPS, force plates, jump tests, velocity profiling) and subjective measures (RPE, wellness questionnaires) to inform training adjustments.
  • Develop and implement injury prevention and management protocols in collaboration with athletic trainers, physiotherapists, and sports medicine professionals; coordinate return-to-throw plans after injury.
  • Recruit, evaluate, and develop talent across feeder systems (high school, club, regional) using established scouting criteria and by building relationships with school coaches and recruiting networks.
  • Maintain accurate training logs, competition records, performance databases, and athlete development plans; report progress to athletes, parents (if applicable), and program leadership.
  • Ensure all training and competition activities comply with organizational, institutional, and governing body rules (e.g., high school associations, NCAA, USATF) including equipment and runway specifications.
  • Supervise and mentor assistant coaches, interns, and volunteers; delegate tasks, provide technical feedback, and facilitate continuing education to build a coherent coaching staff.
  • Manage equipment procurement, maintenance, and inventory for javelins, runway surfaces, grips/tape, and protective gear; ensure safe storage and transport for competitions.
  • Plan practice schedules, coordinate facility bookings, and manage logistics for training sessions and travel to meets, ensuring alignment with the broader track & field calendar.
  • Lead goal-setting sessions with athletes to establish short-term benchmarks and long-term development plans; translate performance analytics into actionable coaching objectives.
  • Design age-appropriate long-term athlete development (LTAD) progressions for youth throwers that balance technical learning, motor skill diversification, and physical maturation.
  • Create and communicate clear codes of conduct and safety protocols for throwing areas to protect athletes, support staff, and spectators.
  • Coordinate and deliver educational sessions on nutrition, sleep, recovery modalities, and supplement safety to maximize training adaptations and competition readiness.
  • Build and maintain relationships with parents, school administrators, athletic directors, and external stakeholders to support athlete development and program funding.
  • Lead post-competition debriefs that provide tactical feedback, recovery plans, and individualized next-step training directives based on performance analysis.
  • Implement diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices in recruiting and coaching to build an equitable team culture and positive athlete experience.
  • Track compliance and complete paperwork for athlete eligibility, travel permissions, and any applicable anti-doping education or testing requirements.

Secondary Functions

  • Support program fundraising, grant writing, and sponsorship outreach to secure resources for facilities, equipment, and athlete travel.
  • Organize and host clinics, camps, and community outreach events to promote the throws discipline and grow the program pipeline.
  • Assist in multi-event meet-day officiating duties when required, including measuring throws, implementing sector safety, and record-keeping.
  • Contribute to the broader track & field program by coordinating with coaches for relay of athlete cross-training, shared facility use, and seasonal scheduling.
  • Participate in coach education, certification programs, and professional development conferences to stay current with coaching trends and evidence-based practices.
  • Help design and maintain a social media presence and athlete highlight reels for recruitment, alumni relations, and program visibility.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of javelin equipment innovation, runway materials, and regulatory changes to ensure competitive fairness and athlete safety.
  • Provide ad-hoc mentoring or counseling referrals and coordinate with campus/student support services for academic or personal issues affecting athletes.
