Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and implement individualized multi-week and annual periodized javelin training plans that integrate technical drills, progressive throwing volume, rest cycles, and competition peaking strategies tailored to each athlete’s age, experience, and injury history.
  • Teach biomechanically sound javelin technique—from grip and run-up mechanics to transition, delivery, and follow-through—using clear, progressive cueing to build reliable, repeatable throws.
  • Conduct on-field technical sessions emphasizing approach mechanics, rhythm, release angle, hip-shoulder separation, and optimal release height, and adapt drills to address specific athlete deficits.
  • Lead warm-ups and cooldowns designed for throwers, incorporating dynamic mobility, activation work, and event-specific movement patterns to reduce injury risk and prepare athletes for maximal efforts.
  • Use video analysis and motion-capture tools to break down throws, identify technical inefficiencies, and produce individualized corrective plans with visual feedback for athletes and supporting staff.
  • Design and coordinate complementary strength and conditioning protocols (in partnership with S&C staff or independently) focusing on explosive power, core stability, unilateral strength, and posterior chain development appropriate for javelin performance.
  • Monitor training load, throwing volume, and athlete recovery metrics; adjust session intensity and volume to manage fatigue, prevent overuse injuries, and maintain consistent progression.
  • Provide on-site competition coaching including warm-up management, technical troubleshooting between rounds, tactical advice, and emotional support to optimize performance under pressure.
  • Implement and enforce comprehensive safety protocols for javelin throws, including range setup, athlete positioning, safe retrieval procedures, emergency action plans, and age-appropriate equipment selection.
  • Conduct pre-participation assessments and screen athletes for mobility, strength imbalances, previous injuries, and readiness for throwing activities; deliver targeted corrective strategies or referrals to medical professionals as needed.
  • Plan and run javelin clinics, camps, and workshops for community outreach, athlete recruitment, and revenue generation, including marketing descriptions, session plans, and equipment logistics.
  • Maintain detailed athlete performance records, training logs, competition results, and progress reports to support long-term athlete development and communicate outcomes to athletes and guardians.
  • Collaborate with physiotherapists, sports medicine providers, nutritionists, and sports psychologists to create multidisciplinary support plans for injured or high-potential athletes.
  • Mentor junior coaches and volunteer assistants, providing practical coaching demonstrations, feedback, and professional development opportunities to build a high-performing throws program.
  • Stay current with advances in javelin coaching methodology, sports science research, equipment innovations, and changes to competition rules; integrate evidence-based practices into coaching plans.
  • Manage equipment inventory (javelins, runway markers, measurement tools), maintain equipment safety standards, and plan procurement to ensure training continuity and compliance with competition specifications.
  • Prepare and manage budgets for throws programs, camps, and competition travel; coordinate logistics for meet entries, transport of equipment, and athlete accommodation when required.
  • Cultivate a positive, inclusive training environment that promotes sportsmanship, goal-setting, resilience, and athlete accountability while adapting coaching styles for diverse learning preferences.
  • Deliver performance feedback and athletic development meetings with clear, actionable objectives, progress milestones, and co-created goals with each athlete to foster ownership and measurable improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with governing body rules (national and local track & field federations), age-group regulations, and anti-doping policies; educate athletes on ethical sport conduct and substance regulations.
  • Lead talent identification sessions and developmental screening programs to identify emerging throwers and provide structured pathways into the club or program pipeline.
  • Coordinate season planning with head coach, club directors, or school athletic departments to align javelin programming with team schedules, facility availability, and competitive calendars.
  • Provide remote coaching and training plan adaptations for athletes training off-site, including virtual video review, written technical drills, and remote monitoring tools.

Secondary Functions

  • Support administrative tasks such as scheduling facility bookings, maintaining athlete waivers, and preparing meet logistics and travel documentation.
  • Assist in fundraising, sponsorship outreach, and community partnerships to support program growth and athlete scholarship opportunities.
  • Contribute to coaching staff meetings, curriculum development for annual training cycles, and the broader organizational strategy for track & field development.
