Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform jazz standards, original compositions, and contemporary repertoire in live club dates, concert halls, festivals, and private events, delivering consistent, high-quality musical leadership and on-stage presence.
  • Improvise with melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic fluency across styles including bebop, hard bop, modal jazz, Latin jazz, swing, and contemporary fusion, adapting solos to the ensemble context and audience.
  • Prepare and execute studio sessions for albums, film/TV cues, jingles, and remote recording projects, following producer direction, delivering clean takes, and working efficiently under time constraints.
  • Sight-read complex lead sheets, charts, and transcriptions with accuracy, entering rehearsals and sessions prepared to contribute immediately to arranged and improvised sections.
  • Arrange and transcribe tunes for small combos and larger ensembles, producing written charts and lead sheets in standard notation and chord-symbol formats suitable for rehearsals and recording sessions.
  • Compose original material for personal projects, commissions, or collaborative albums, developing full arrangements, demo recordings, and lead sheets for bandmates and producers.
  • Lead rehearsals, run sectionals, and manage musical direction for groups — setting tempo, feel, dynamics, and cue structures while communicating changes clearly to band members.
  • Curate and maintain a diverse repertoire of jazz standards, contemporary works, and original compositions; create and refine set lists tailored to venue, audience, and event requirements.
  • Collaborate with promoters, venue managers, and booking agents to schedule performances, negotiate contracts and fees, and coordinate rider and technical requirements.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced musicians during rehearsals and sessions, providing constructive feedback on phrasing, time feel, improvisational choices, and ensemble blend.
  • Maintain and manage your instrument, amplification, and on-stage gear — tuning, setup, troubleshooting, and liaison with sound engineers to achieve optimal onstage and recorded sound.
  • Participate in music festivals, competitions, and workshops as performer, clinician, or panelist to expand professional network, gain exposure, and contribute to community outreach.
  • Transcribe solos and arrangements from recordings and live performances to develop repertory, prepare charts, and study stylistic nuances of target repertoire and artists.
  • Execute professional-level stagecraft including soundcheck procedures, mic technique, staging, and stage etiquette to ensure smooth and timely performances with respect for venue staff and other artists.
  • Collaborate with vocalists, horn players, rhythm sections, and rhythm dancers or choreographers when necessary, arranging parts to support singers or other soloists and adapt in real time.
  • Manage day-to-day business operations including scheduling, invoicing, contract review, copyright management for original compositions, and royalty tracking for recorded works.
  • Create and maintain digital assets — annotated charts, click tracks, parts, and reference recordings — and distribute them via cloud services or ensemble drives in advance of rehearsals and sessions.
  • Promote events and personal brand through social media, mailing lists, press kits, and engagement with local jazz communities to maximize attendance and streaming revenue.
  • Adapt arrangements and performance approach for non-traditional settings — corporate events, private parties, multi-genre festivals, and education outreach — balancing artistic integrity with client needs.
  • Provide accompaniment and collaborative support for masterclasses, workshops, and educational residencies; design curriculum and demonstrate technique, improvisation methods, and ensemble interplay.
  • Ensure compliance with union (e.g., AFM) and contractual obligations including buyouts, session fees, and crediting on liner notes and streaming platforms.
  • Participate in remote sessions and livestream concerts, mastering digital performance etiquette, streaming platforms, latency-reduction practices, and remote collaboration workflows.
  • Serve as a cultural ambassador for jazz by engaging in community programs, school outreach, lecture-demonstrations, and public talks to increase visibility and support audience development.
  • Maintain awareness of current trends in jazz and adjacent genres; continually study new harmonic approaches, rhythmic concepts, and technology to evolve artistic voice and marketability.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a professional online presence: update website, EPK, social channels, and streaming platforms with recent recordings, press photos, and upcoming dates.
  • Assist in marketing efforts: coordinate with publicists, design promotional materials, and contribute content for email newsletters and social campaigns.
  • Help coordinate travel logistics for touring: transportation, accommodation, visas, and per diem planning in collaboration with tour managers or booking agents.
  • Support collaborative cross-genre projects and interdisciplinary performances, integrating jazz techniques with dance, theater, or multimedia presentations.
  • Participate in fundraising, grant-writing, and funding applications when applying for residencies, commissions, or festival support.
  • Serve as subcontractor or sideman on other artists’ projects, adapting quickly to different artistic directors and stylistic requirements.
