Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform dynamic and stylistically authentic jazz percussion parts across small combos, large ensembles, and big bands, demonstrating a deep command of swing feel, brush technique, comping, and interactive soloing that supports the ensemble and advances musical direction.
  • Read and interpret charts and lead sheets accurately in rehearsal and performance settings, delivering immediate, musically appropriate responses to chart changes, cueing, and tempo modulations.
  • Improvise tasteful drum solos and fills that respect the tune’s form and dynamics, employing advanced concepts such as motivic development, polyrhythms, linear drumming, and metric modulation when musically appropriate.
  • Maintain impeccable timekeeping and pulse across styles (swing, bebop, hard bop, modal, avant-garde, Latin jazz), providing a reliable rhythmic foundation for soloists and ensemble passages.
  • Provide stylistic versatility by switching between stick, brush, and mallet techniques within a single performance, orchestrating textures to enhance ensemble tone and song structure.
  • Support rhythm section leadership by actively listening and responding to harmonic and melodic shifts, reinforcing grooves with dynamic control and ensemble sensitivity.
  • Prepare thoroughly for rehearsals and performances by transcribing parts, learning charts from recordings, memorizing forms, and rehearsing stylistically appropriate grooves and fills.
  • Coordinate and set up percussion stations for live gigs and studio sessions, including drum kit, cymbals, mallet instruments, hand percussion, and electronic pads; ensure proper tuning, heads, and ergonomic setup.
  • Work with sound engineers to select and position microphones for optimal drum and percussion capture, understanding how mic placement and EQ affect live and recorded jazz aesthetics.
  • Execute studio recording sessions with professionalism—locking to click when required, comping takes, following producer direction, and contributing creative rhythmic ideas during tracking and overdubs.
  • Collaborate with arrangers, bandleaders, and composers to develop and refine percussion parts, offering constructive input on textures, fills, and transitional devices that strengthen arrangements.
  • Adapt quickly to last-minute setlist changes and impromptu arrangements during live shows, maintaining composure and delivering musically coherent responses in high-pressure situations.
  • Coach and mentor junior percussionists and students during rehearsals or workshops, demonstrating technique, reading strategies, and improvisational approaches relevant to jazz performance.
  • Manage instrument maintenance and logistics, including regular tuning, head replacement, cymbal care, hardware repairs, and secure transport of percussion equipment for rehearsals and tours.
  • Curate and maintain a professional repertoire spanning standards, modern compositions, and original works; organize setlists for different venues and audiences with attention to pacing and dynamic contrast.
  • Facilitate collaborative rehearsals that prioritize musical goals—setting tempos, counting off, balancing dynamics, and offering clear, positive musical direction when needed.
  • Lead or participate in sectional rehearsals focusing on rhythmic articulation, brush technique, ride pattern development, and interplay between bass and percussion.
  • Arrange and adapt percussion parts for different instrumentations, translating big-band drum charts to trio/quad settings or augmenting acoustic parts with auxiliary percussion for color.
  • Develop and implement reads/transcriptions of exemplary jazz drummers and percussionists as part of ongoing professional development and repertoire building.
  • Promote shows, recordings, and educational offerings through social media, press materials, and local networking to build audience awareness and gig opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with venue policies and safety protocols for stage setup, cable management, and load-in/load-out procedures; coordinate with stage managers for efficient transitions.
  • Participate in community outreach, masterclasses, and clinics to represent the ensemble or organization, enhancing the profile of jazz percussion within local and regional music communities.
