Primary Functions

  • Collaborate with bandleaders, musical directors and fellow musicians during rehearsals to interpret arrangements, balance dynamics, and refine phrasing, articulation and ensemble blend for consistent performances.
  • Record saxophone parts in studio sessions, delivering precise intonation, stylistic grooves, comping and solo takes while following producer and engineer direction, delivering stems and edits as requested.

  • Perform in big band and large ensemble settings, executing written parts precisely, following sectional balance and contributing tasteful solos when assigned, while understanding chart conventions and shorthand.
  • Deliver clinic and masterclass presentations focused on improvisation, tone production, repertoire building and career development for students and community outreach programs when requested.
  • Collaborate with arrangers and composers to create bespoke charts, voicings and horn arrangements tailored to the ensemble’s instrumentation and the artistic objectives of recording or live projects.
  • Keep up to date with new repertoire, contemporary jazz developments and cross-genre trends to remain marketable for diverse bookings, festival programming and studio work.
  • Manage logistics for touring and travel including instrument cases, airline policies, patching for amplification, and liaising with tour managers to ensure timely arrivals and compliant transportation of instruments.
  • Ensure professional onstage demeanor and reliable attendance, representing the band or organization in a positive way with promoters, press and fans, and adhering to union or contractual obligations where applicable.
  • Support marketing efforts by supplying quality photos, audio/video clips, biography text, and social media content to promote shows, recordings and educational events.
  • Track and invoice session work, gig fees and teaching engagements accurately, maintaining clear communication with clients and ensuring timely payment and contract compliance.
