Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead and perform with exceptional musicality as a featured soloist and ensemble member in small jazz combos, big bands, pit orchestras, and festival lineups, consistently delivering stylistically authentic phrasing, tone, and articulation.
  • Prepare and memorize extended repertoire including jazz standards, charts, lead sheets, and original arrangements; demonstrate command of common forms (AABA, blues, modal) and harmonic language.
  • Sight-read complex charts and transcriptions with accuracy and musical sensitivity during rehearsals, rehearsed performances, and on-the-fly replacement gigs, ensuring tight ensemble cohesion.
  • Improvise compelling solos informed by bebop, hard bop, swing, Latin-jazz, and modern jazz vocabulary; craft melodic statements with rhythmic invention, motivic development, and harmonic clarity.
  • Provide reliable section playing: blend intonation, matching tone color and articulations within trombone section and brass sections, execute written parts with dynamic control and stylistic nuance.
  • Serve as a lead trombone or section leader when required: cue entries, manage section balance, interpret charts, and liaise between conductor/bandleader and the brass section to maintain high performance standards.
  • Participate in studio recording sessions and commercial work: nail parts quickly, follow producer direction, comp for vocalists, and deliver consistent takes with excellent pitch, timing, and tone suitable for tracking and overdubs.
  • Collaborate with arrangers, producers, and bandleaders to create and refine arrangements and voicings for brass sections, proposing alternate lines, harmonizations, or fills that enhance the musical product.
  • Maintain professional preparedness for touring: manage instrument care, tuning, gear, and travel logistics; adapt playing to different venues, rooms, and acoustic environments.
  • Read and interpret complex lead sheets, full scores, and individual parts, including cueing, transposition (when required), and clef changes (bass, tenor, alto clefs as applicable).
  • Coach, mentor, and lead sectional rehearsals or private lessons for less experienced players; provide clear instruction on technique, stylistic interpretation, and improvisation strategies.
  • Transcribe solos and passages from recordings, integrate learned motifs into personal vocabulary, and use transcriptions to inform phrasing and improvisational choices.
  • Deliver consistent, well-articulated lead lines and fills in support of singers, soloists, and ensemble arrangements, paying attention to dynamics, diction, and ensemble balance.
  • Adapt quickly to stylistic shifts—swing, Latin, funk, fusion, modern jazz—applying appropriate articulation, rhythmic placement, and groove to serve the music.
  • Maintain and organize a professional library of charts, lead sheets, and reference recordings for rehearsals, gigs, and sessions; ensure up-to-date parts and backups (digital and hard copy).
  • Attend rehearsals punctually, contribute constructive musical input, and participate in pre-concert warm-ups and section tuning to ensure a unified ensemble sound.
  • Utilize music-reading and notation software (Sibelius, Finale) and digital audio tools to review, edit, and submit parts for recording sessions or published arrangements.
  • Communicate professionally with booking agents, bandleaders, music directors, and production teams regarding availability, technical requirements (mics, monitors), and set lists.
  • Promote performances and recordings through social media, artist websites, and local networks; maintain a professional online presence with audio/video demos, bios, and press materials.
  • Adhere to professional standards for on-stage conduct, punctuality, and rehearsal etiquette; represent the band or organization positively at performances, rehearsals, interviews, and community events.
  • Provide reliable doubling skills when applicable (e.g., bass trombone, euphonium, muted/straight mute techniques) to increase versatility for pit orchestras, studio gigs, and commercial projects.
  • Track and maintain embouchure health, physical conditioning, and practice routines to sustain endurance for long sets, tours, and recording blocks.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in arranging horn voicings, harmonic textures, and counter-lines to enhance compositions or live set dynamics; propose creative solutions during pre-production.
  • Support educational outreach initiatives, clinics, and masterclasses at schools, festivals, and community programs; adapt material to varying skill levels.
  • Collaborate with sound engineers and techs to optimize mic placement, monitor mixes, and live sound balance tailored to trombone frequencies and ensemble blend.
  • Volunteer or lead in-house auditions, help scout replacement musicians, and contribute to hiring recommendations when part of an ensemble leadership team.
  • Participate in band marketing strategy sessions, contribute content ideas for livestreams, and provide short-form video/audio examples for promotional campaigns.
  • Keep an updated inventory of instruments, mutes, slides, spare parts, and maintenance supplies; coordinate repairs with qualified technicians to minimize downtime.
  • Contribute to the development of rehearsal schedules, set lists, and performance programming that support artistic direction and audience engagement.
