Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  1. Marshal incoming and outgoing jet aircraft using standardized hand signals, wands and lighted batons while maintaining safe clearance from obstacles and personnel to ensure precisely guided aircraft positioning at gates and stands.
  2. Safely tow and pushback aircraft using tow tractors and tow bars, coordinating with flight crews and ground control to execute pushback sequences and repositioning without damage to aircraft or equipment.
  3. Operate and monitor ground power units (GPUs), ground air conditioning units (preconditioned air), and auxiliary power units (APU) start procedures to provide electrical and pneumatic services during turnaround.
  4. Perform aircraft fueling and defueling operations per company procedures and regulatory standards, including connecting fuel lines, monitoring flow rates, completing fuel documentation, and adhering to hazardous materials handling and bonding/grounding protocols.
  5. Conduct pre- and post-service visual inspections of aircraft exterior (tyres, brakes, structural panels, hydraulic leaks) and immediately report safety discrepancies, damage or foreign object debris (FOD) to maintenance and operations.
  6. Execute de-icing and anti-icing procedures (as required) including setup of equipment, mixing/applying approved fluids, performing post-treatment checks, and documenting treatments in accordance with cold-weather operations manuals.
  7. Load and secure ground service carts, lavatory service trucks, potable water service hoses and catering containers while tracking service times and communicating completion to flight attendants and load control.
  8. Handle aircraft cabin and cargo door operations, operate passenger boarding stairs and jet bridges, and assist with safe boarding/disembarkation procedures while communicating with customer service and crew.
  9. Position chocks, cones, and safety barriers around parked aircraft and enforce ramp exclusion zones to protect personnel and equipment during servicing and engine run-ups.
  10. Perform routine preventive maintenance and daily inspections on GSE (e.g., tow tractors, belt loaders, GPUs, fuel trucks) and complete repair requests, lubrication, refueling and battery checks to maximize equipment readiness.
  11. Operate nitrogen, oxygen and potable water service carts and execute service protocols while tracking consumables and maintaining contamination control.
  12. Complete accurate load sheets, service logs, fuel receipts, heavy maintenance tags and other ramp documentation; enter data into the operations system or dispatch portal to maintain an auditable record.
  13. Communicate effectively via headset, radio and hand signals with flight crew, ramp control, and maintenance to coordinate engine starts, taxi clearances, and departure sequencing.
  14. Enforce and comply with all safety, security and environmental rules, including LOTO (lockout/tagout) for equipment, hazardous materials spill response, and adherence to airport security badge protocols.
  15. Assist maintenance technicians during ground checks, engine runs and troubleshooting tasks by providing safe access, positioning equipment and relaying observations to maintenance logs.
  16. Respond to aircraft emergency situations on the ramp (fuel spills, pollution incidents, ground fires or incidents) by executing emergency procedures, isolating affected areas and coordinating with ARFF and operations teams.
  17. Train new ramp personnel in safe GSE operation, aircraft marshaling, fueling procedures and company-specific SOPs, and serve as a mentor on ramp safety culture and best practices.
  18. Monitor weather, NOTAMs and operational advisories affecting ramp safety (wind, visibility, ice) and adjust procedures (de-icing, chocking patterns, towing restrictions) accordingly.
  19. Manage turnaround timelines by prioritizing tasks, sequencing GSE and personnel movements to minimize ground time and support on-time performance metrics.
  20. Conduct Foreign Object Debris (FOD) walks and ramp inspections before and after operations, log findings and take corrective actions to keep operational surfaces clear and safe.
  21. Coordinate with cargo and ramp teams for special load operations (over-sized cargo, hazardous materials shipments) ensuring proper restraint, placarding and compliance with airline policies and regulatory rules.
  22. Support continuous improvement initiatives by submitting safety reports, participating in incident reviews, and recommending operational changes that reduce risk and increase efficiency.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with inventory control for spare parts, oils, de-icing fluids and GSE consumables; record usage and coordinate replenishment with supply.
  • Provide back-up support for customer-facing ramp duties such as marshalling for ambulance/medical evacuations and VIP movements.
  • Participate in cross-functional safety audits, toolbox talks and recurrent training sessions; keep certifications and recurring qualifications current.
  • Support event-based operations (AOG recoveries, diversion handling, irregular operations) by mobilizing GSE and additional manpower as directed by operations control.
  • Document and escalate equipment faults and maintenance needs via the asset management system and follow up to ensure repairs are completed before next operation.
