- Assist senior painters and supervisors during complex rework, full-aircraft resprays, liveries, and multi-stage coating projects, learning sequence, tolerances, and quality acceptance criteria.
- Support pre-paint corrosion inspection and treatment by cleaning corrosion areas, applying conversion coatings and primers, and reporting structural concerns to maintenance teams for repair before topcoating.
- Perform detailed surface inspections, identify pinholes, runs, sags and contamination, and make corrective actions (sanding, spot priming, recoat) to ensure final finish meets OEM and customer acceptance.
- Set up and take down scaffolding, platforms and ladders safely around aircraft using fall protection and lockout/tagout procedures; assist with positioning and securing work platforms for complex paint access.
- Clean and maintain paint booths, prep areas, spray guns, filters, and associated tools; perform routine preventive maintenance and report equipment issues affecting finish quality or safety.
- Adhere to respiratory protection programs, proper PPE selection and use (supplied-air respirators, cartridges, gloves, coveralls) and ensure respirator fit-testing and maintenance records are current.
- Support component disassembly/reassembly for painting of small parts and panels; coordinate with mechanics to remove/install avionic, electrical, or structural items that cannot be painted in-situ.
- Collaborate with QA inspectors to complete final inspection tags, receptivity checks, and documentation for customer sign-off and airworthiness records when required.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste, improve coating utilization, and optimize booth throughput while protecting finish quality and compliance.
- Learn and execute military and civilian paint technical orders, engineering drawings, and process specifications (MIL-PRF, OEM bulletins, FAA advisory circulars) under supervision.
- Maintain inventory of paints, thinners, masking materials and PPE; request replenishment, label containers correctly, and track lot numbers to support traceability.
- Support turnover and handoff activities between shifts and paint teams by writing clear notes in job logs and briefing incoming personnel on in-progress tasks, outstanding defects, and next steps.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in daily shift safety and tool-box talks focused on paint operations, hazardous materials, and spill prevention.
- Participate in apprentice training programs, cross-training sessions, and vendor-led coating certification courses to expand technical capability.
- Help the paint team with logistical tasks including moving aircraft sections, staging panels, and organizing work areas for efficient paint flow.
- Support environmental compliance audits and participate in corrective action plans for coating and solvent usage reduction.
- Provide input on paint process documentation updates and standard operating procedures as experience and proficiency increase.
- Help maintain and update digital paint logs, photo records of work progression, and upload inspection evidence to the company maintenance management system.
- Aid in basic surface treatment tasks such as de-greasing, chemical pretreatment, and mask removal after curing.
- Assist QA with measuring gloss, color conformity and adhesion test samples and prepare corrective action recommendations for recurrent discrepancies.
- Support ad-hoc customer requests such as special livery demos, prototype sample preparation, or rapid touch-up work with supervision.
- Monitor and report workplace hazards, near-misses, and equipment malfunctions to maintain a safe and compliant painting environment.
