Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive pre-flight mission planning including route analysis, fuel calculations, weight and balance, NOTAM and weather briefings, threat assessment for tactical environments, and alternate airfield planning to ensure mission and safety objectives are met.
  • Perform detailed pre-flight and post-flight aircraft inspections, verify maintenance discrepancies, sign technical logs, and coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure aircraft airworthiness and timely resolution of deferred discrepancies.
  • Execute takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, and landing phases of flight with precision in accordance with SOPs, ATC clearances, IFR procedures, and applicable carrier or tactical approach techniques.
  • Operate and manage complex avionics suites, flight management systems (FMS), mission computers, radar, heads-up displays (HUD), digital maps, and weapon delivery systems (where applicable) to achieve mission objectives.
  • Conduct instrument flight operations under IFR, including precision and non‑precision approaches, holds, missed approach procedures, and intersection/visual approaches while maintaining situational awareness and ATC coordination.
  • Plan and execute formation flying, aerial refueling rendezvous and breakaways, and tactical maneuvering in multi-aircraft operations while maintaining formation integrity and clear communications.
  • Execute low-level navigation, nap-of-the-earth (NOE) profiles, or high-altitude supersonic flight as required by mission profiles or test envelopes, applying appropriate speed, g-management, and energy-state control.
  • Lead and participate in complex mission briefs and debriefs that document objectives, tactics, outcomes, safety events, and lessons learned; provide constructive feedback to team members and maintain mission records.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of aircraft systems (engines, hydraulics, flight controls, environmental control, fuel systems, avionics, and ejection systems) to troubleshoot in-flight anomalies and advise maintenance on root causes.
  • Execute emergency and abnormal procedures calmly and decisively, including engine failure, electrical/fire warnings, hydraulic failures, rapid decompression, and ejection protocols; ensure passenger/crew safety where applicable.
  • Comply with national and international regulatory requirements (FAA, EASA, ICAO), military regulations, airspace restrictions, and security protocols when operating in domestic and joint operations environments.
  • Utilize simulator time for recurrent training, systems qualification, and mission rehearsal; mentor and evaluate junior aircrew during simulator sessions to maintain high readiness and proficiency.
  • Conduct night vision goggle (NVG) operations, night flight planning, and crew coordination for low-visibility environments with emphasis on spatial orientation and collision avoidance.
  • Plan and lead cross-country and long-range flights with emphasis on contingency planning, crew rest management, international customs/immigration coordination, and alternate routing.
  • Perform flight test and envelope expansion duties in test pilot roles, collaborate with engineering and safety teams to develop test cards, collect and analyze flight test data, and report anomalies and performance metrics.
  • Maintain accurate flight logs, mission reports, maintenance discrepancy entries, and readiness paperwork required by squadron, airline, or regulatory authorities.
  • Communicate clearly and continuously with ATC, mission control, squadron command, and multi-national partners using standard phraseology, encrypted radios, datalinks, and tactical communication systems.
  • Lead and participate in safety investigations, incident reporting, and corrective action programs; implement risk mitigation strategies to reduce operational hazards and improve mission success rates.
  • Mentor, evaluate, and develop junior pilots and crew through formal instruction, scheduled check rides, and proficiency checks; prepare aircrew for certification and upgrade training.
  • Coordinate with intelligence, planners, and support units to integrate tactical information, targeting data, and real-time updates during dynamic mission sets to ensure synchronized operations.
  • Manage crew resource management (CRM) during single- and multi-crew operations to optimize decision-making, workload distribution, and communication under high-stress or degraded environments.
  • Perform and document operational readiness checks, weapons loading verification (for military roles), and ensure compliance with explosive safety and secure weapons handling procedures.
  • Represent the unit, airline, or company professionally at joint exercises, airshows, business development flights, and public relations events while adhering to operational security and corporate communications policies.

Secondary Functions

  • Lead and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for flight operations, SOP updates, and risk management frameworks.
  • Participate in cross-functional working groups with maintenance, avionics, safety, and engineering teams to improve aircraft reliability and mission effectiveness.
  • Assist in developing training syllabi, checkride standards, and evaluation criteria for new aircraft type certifications or fleet upgrades.

Required Skills & Competencies

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with completion of accredited flight training program and requisite pilot licenses OR

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
