A Jet Ramp Agent (also called Ramp Service Agent, Ground Handler, or Aircraft Ramp Agent) is responsible for safe, efficient aircraft turnaround on the ramp. This role includes marshaling aircraft, operating ground support equipment (GSE) such as belt loaders and pushback tractors, loading and unloading baggage and cargo, performing ramp safety checks, and coordinating with flight crews, ground control, and operations teams to meet tight schedule windows. Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Marshal aircraft to and from parking stands using standardized hand signals and illuminated wands, ensuring precise alignment and clearances for safe engine start, towing, and passenger boarding; coordinate with flight deck and tower to confirm parking position.
- Operate pushback tractors/tugs and provide safe, controlled pushback and towing operations adhering to airline SOPs and local airport regulations, ensuring zero damage to aircraft and GSE.
- Load and unload checked baggage and bulk cargo on widebody and narrowbody aircraft using belt loaders, cargo dollies, and containerized unit load devices (ULDs) while following weight/size restrictions and special handling instructions for fragile, perishable, or oversized items.
- Perform accurate weight and balance checks by communicating with load control teams, tagging and segregating bags by zone, and reporting discrepancies that could affect aircraft center of gravity or performance.
- Conduct pre- and post-flight ground inspections: chock placement, safety cones, gear pins handling, visual walkarounds for FOD (foreign object debris), leaks, tire issues, and obvious structural or system abnormalities; report hazards immediately.
- Operate ground power units (GPU), air start units, belt loaders, high-loaders, de-icing equipment, and baggage tractors safely and perform daily operational checks; document equipment defects and remove unsafe GSE from service.
- Perform aircraft fueling monitoring and coordination with fuel services: verify fuel orders, maintain clear communication during refueling, and observe fueling safety zones and no-go areas.
- Safely handle and process dangerous goods (DG) / hazardous materials, following DOT, IATA, and airline-specific DG policies; identify undeclared or mis-declared items and escalate per procedures.
- Load and secure ULDs, pallets, and bulk cargo using correct restraint systems, netting, and locking mechanisms; ensure cargo doors are secured and documentation such as manifests and customs forms are accurate and complete.
- Execute pushback and engine start watch procedures, maintaining safe distances and clear communication with flight crew to prevent Ground Service incidents.
- Manage flight turn priorities to meet on-time performance metrics: expedite late-arriving flights, coordinate with operations to reassign manpower, and assist with rapid re-routes when required.
- Perform de-icing/anti-icing coordination: assist with positioning and communicating aircraft type and critical surfaces, monitor fluid application windows, and ensure compliance with cold-weather operations procedures.
- Tag, log, and process mishandled baggage and irregularities using the airlineβs handling system; coordinate baggage tracing and assist customer service teams in resolving passenger baggage issues.
- Maintain compliance with security screening procedures, access control, and citizen ID verification for ramp access points; follow TSA and airport authority rules for restricted area operations.
- Complete required paperwork, electronic logs, and shift reports accurately β including incident reports, equipment defect tags, fuel release forms, and weight/balance documentation β to maintain operational traceability and regulatory compliance.
- Train, mentor, and onboard new ramp staff; demonstrate safe equipment operation and ramp protocols during shifts and provide feedback to supervisors on team performance and training needs.
- Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and emergency response drills; apply lockout/tagout, confined space awareness, and fire response fundamentals when incidents occur on the ramp.
- Coordinate with airline operations, customer service, cargo, and maintenance teams to resolve aircraft on-ground issues, late-arrival baggage, tech delays, or passenger connect concerns while prioritizing safety and schedule recovery.
- Apply FOD prevention best practices: conduct regular runway/ramp sweeps, secure loose equipment, and educate team members to reduce foreign object ingestion risk and ramp damage.
- Perform basic GSE troubleshooting and light maintenance tasks such as refueling ground vehicles, replacing damaged safety cones/chocks, and reporting service needs to GSE mechanics to keep the fleet operational.
- Adhere to airline-specific environmental protocols including fuel spill containment, de-icing fluid capture, and hazardous waste handling to support sustainability and regulatory compliance.
- Enforce noise abatement, environmental, and local airport curfew procedures when moving equipment and operating engines near terminal zones.
- Support special operations such as VIP flights, medical evacuations, oversized cargo, and animal transport by coordinating unique handling, documentation, and security requirements.
