Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist in the preparation and assembly of wax models onto "trees" in preparation for the casting process, ensuring proper placement and spruing for optimal metal flow.
- Learn and execute the investment process by mixing investment powder and water to precise consistencies and pouring it over wax trees to create durable molds.
- Operate and monitor burnout ovens according to established schedules and temperature profiles to completely eliminate wax from the molds and properly cure the investment.
- Accurately weigh and prepare precious metal alloys, including gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, according to specific job orders and quality standards.
- Under close supervision, operate vacuum and/or centrifugal casting machines to melt and inject molten metal into investment molds, ensuring a complete and high-quality fill.
- Carefully devest cast trees from the investment mold after the cooling process, using water blasters and other tools without damaging the raw castings.
- Meticulously inspect raw castings for defects such as porosity, flashing, or incomplete fills, and report findings to the senior caster for process improvement.
- Precisely clip or saw individual jewelry pieces from the cast tree, organizing them by job for the next stage of production.
- Perform initial finishing and cleaning of raw castings, including sprue grinding and tumbling, to prepare them for the bench jewelers.
- Maintain a detailed and accurate log of all casting runs, recording metal types, weights, temperatures, and any observed issues to ensure process consistency and traceability.
- Follow all established safety protocols for handling hot materials, operating machinery, and working with chemicals to maintain a safe and secure workshop environment.
- Learn to troubleshoot common casting issues by analyzing defects and assisting senior casters in adjusting process variables like temperature, pressure, and timing.
- Manage the collection, weighing, and organization of scrap metal, sprues, and casting buttons for recycling and refining.
- Perform routine cleaning and basic preventative maintenance on casting equipment, including ovens, casting machines, and vacuum pumps, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
Secondary Functions
- Support the mold-making department by preparing master models for vulcanization or silicone molding as needed.
- Assist in managing inventory levels of casting grain, investment powder, crucible liners, and other essential casting supplies, notifying supervisors of reorder needs.
- Prepare and maintain crucibles for each metal type, ensuring they are properly cleaned, glazed, and stored to prevent cross-contamination.
- Operate magnetic tumblers, ultrasonic cleaners, and other finishing equipment to clean castings and prepare them for stone setting or final polishing.
- Collaborate with the design and CAD/CAM teams to provide feedback on model printability and castability to optimize the design-to-manufacturing workflow.
- Participate in regular team meetings to discuss production schedules, quality control feedback, and continuous improvement initiatives.
