Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assisting senior designers with the entire design process, from initial mood board creation and conceptual brainstorming to final design refinement for new collections and bespoke pieces.
  • Creating detailed and precise technical drawings, sketches, and specifications (tech packs) for manufacturing, ensuring all details like dimensions, stone settings, and materials are clearly communicated.
  • Developing proficiency in 2D design software, such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, to create compelling design presentations and clean up hand-drawn sketches for digital use.
  • Learning and applying 3D CAD modeling software (such as Rhino, MatrixGold, or ZBrush) to translate 2D concepts into manufacturable 3D models under supervision.
  • Supporting the creation of physical prototypes and models, which may involve hands-on work with wax carving, 3D printing, or basic metalsmithing techniques.
  • Participating in design review meetings, taking detailed notes, and helping to implement feedback and revisions from the senior design and management teams.
  • Conducting thorough trend research and market analysis by studying competitor products, fashion trends, and cultural influences to contribute fresh ideas to the design team.
  • Organizing and maintaining the library of design assets, including sketches, CAD files, material samples, and gemstone inventories, ensuring everything is meticulously cataloged.
  • Assisting in the quality control process by inspecting samples, prototypes, and first-run production pieces to ensure they meet the brand's high standards of craftsmanship and design intent.
  • Liaising with the production team and external vendors to track the progress of samples and prototypes, communicating any issues or delays back to the design team.
  • Preparing materials and components for jewelers and setters, ensuring all necessary stones, findings, and metals are correctly allocated for specific projects.
  • Documenting the design and development process for each piece, creating a comprehensive record for future reference and production scaling.
  • Sourcing and evaluating new materials, gemstones, and findings by communicating with suppliers and attending trade shows alongside senior team members.
  • Supporting the preparation of presentation materials for internal line reviews, sales meetings, and client presentations.
  • Performing minor bench work as needed, such as simple repairs, resizing, or assembly, to better understand the construction and physical limitations of jewelry.
  • Managing the 3D printing queue, including machine setup, post-processing of printed models, and troubleshooting minor printing issues.
  • Assisting in the costing process by gathering information on material weights, stone prices, and labor estimates for new designs.
  • Contributing creative input and developing personal design concepts for consideration in future collection brainstorming sessions.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized studio environment, ensuring tools and equipment are properly cared for and stored.
  • Collaborating with the marketing and e-commerce teams by providing accurate product details and design stories for new launches.

Secondary Functions

  • Assisting with the organization and maintenance of the finished jewelry sample library for press loans and sales appointments.
  • Supporting the team during market week preparations, trade shows, and client events, which may include setup, visual merchandising, and client interaction.
  • Helping to photograph new pieces or prototypes for internal archives, social media content, or preliminary cataloging.
  • Participating in team-wide training on new software, techniques, or industry best practices to foster continuous learning.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Hand Sketching & Rendering: Strong ability to communicate design ideas clearly through traditional drawing and rendering techniques.
  • CAD Software Proficiency (Beginner to Intermediate): Foundational knowledge of 3D modeling software like Rhinoceros (Rhino), MatrixGold, or ZBrush.
  • Adobe Creative Suite: Competency in Adobe Illustrator for creating technical flats and Photoshop for rendering or mood board creation.
  • Technical Specifications: Ability to create or learn to create detailed technical packets (tech packs) with precise measurements and callouts for manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of Jewelry Manufacturing: Understanding of fundamental production processes, including casting, stone setting, polishing, and fabrication.
  • Basic Gemology: Familiarity with common gemstones, the 4Cs of diamonds, and different types of cuts and shapes.
  • Metalsmithing/Bench Skills: Basic hands-on experience with tools for sawing, filing, soldering, and finishing is highly advantageous.
  • 3D Printing Knowledge: Understanding of the process of preparing CAD files for 3D printing and post-processing resin models.
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Proficiency in Excel/Google Sheets for tracking and organizing data related to designs, materials, and costs.
  • Model Making: Experience with wax carving or other methods of creating physical prototypes.
