The Job Site Supervisor Assistant (also known as Assistant Site Supervisor or Assistant Foreman) is a hands-on operational role responsible for supporting the Site Supervisor in delivering projects on time, within budget, and to specification. This role requires proactive coordination of trades, vigilant enforcement of safety and quality controls, thorough documentation of daily progress, and close communication with subcontractors, suppliers, and the project team. The Assistant Supervisor acts as the supervisor’s onsite representative during day-to-day execution, resolving issues that affect schedule, cost, and compliance while escalating strategic problems to management.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist the Site Supervisor in daily planning and sequencing of construction activities, coordinating crews and subcontractors to maintain the project schedule and avoid conflicts on site.
  • Monitor on-site safety practices and enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations; perform daily safety walks, report hazards, and follow up on corrective actions to maintain a zero-incident mindset.
  • Conduct regular quality inspections of work in progress against drawings, specifications, and method statements; document non-conformances and follow through with corrective actions and re-inspection.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs and progress reports including workforce counts, equipment usage, deliveries, weather, and delays; prepare concise summaries for the Site Supervisor and Project Manager.
  • Track material deliveries, verify quantities and quality on arrival, manage laydown and storage areas, and coordinate with procurement to address shortages or incorrect shipments.
  • Assist with layout and verification of field measurements using tapes, levels, and basic surveying tools to ensure work is installed to specification and within tolerance.
  • Coordinate and document subcontractor scope of work, daily activities, timekeeping, and adherence to site rules; escalate subcontractor performance issues to the Site Supervisor for resolution.
  • Support permit management and ensure required permits, inspection bookings, and third-party approvals are obtained and available on site.
  • Prepare and submit Request for Information (RFI) details, site clarification requests, and sketches to the design or project team as directed by the Site Supervisor.
  • Manage routine equipment and tool inventories, coordinate maintenance and fueling, and ensure safe operation and storage of powered equipment and tools on site.
  • Supervise and direct junior site staff and laborers in daily tasks, provide on-the-job coaching, and ensure workers follow established procedures and best practices.
  • Implement and maintain effective site housekeeping and traffic-management plans to protect workers, materials, and the public; ensure proper signage, barriers, and PPE usage.
  • Assist in measuring and recording field quantities for progress billing, prepare supporting documentation for change orders, and help track project cost-impact events.
  • Attend and actively contribute to daily briefings, toolbox talks, weekly coordination meetings, and subcontractor pre-task plans, taking clear minutes and follow-up actions.
  • Perform field verification of installations for compliance with project drawings and manufacturer instructions; escalate ambiguous conditions to the Site Supervisor for decision-making.
  • Support onboarding and induction of new site workers and subcontractor crews, ensure site safety orientation and required certifications are recorded and up to date.
  • Facilitate inspections by client representatives, building officials, and third-party quality auditors; coordinate access, provide documentation, and record inspection outcomes and punch lists.
  • Monitor productivity and labor utilization; collect timesheets, verify hours, and communicate discrepancies to payroll or site management.
  • Enforce environmental controls and waste management plans, ensure proper handling of hazardous materials, and support spill response and remediation activities as required.
  • Use construction management software or mobile applications to record field data, photo documentation, and site communications to maintain a clear audit trail of daily operations.
  • Assist in implementing corrective/preventive measures following incident investigations and help document lessons learned to avoid recurrence.
  • Support temporary works and shoring activities by verifying installation conditions, ensuring compliance with engineered drawings, and coordinating inspections.
  • Help manage subcontractor payments by compiling daily production reports, measure work completed, and assisting the Site Supervisor in preparing supporting documentation for progress claims.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide administrative support such as filing permits, maintaining project correspondence logs, and ensuring accurate recordkeeping for audits.
  • Support procurement activities by creating purchase requisitions, following up on deliveries, and maintaining a reconciliation of materials received versus planned.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process improvements for site workflows, material handling, and safety programs.
  • Assist in training programs for new hires and apprentices, delivering toolbox talks and competency assessments under supervisor guidance.
  • Participate in pre-construction and handover activities, including site close-out documentation, punch list management, and turnover packages for clients.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Construction site safety management and working knowledge of OSHA and local regulatory requirements.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications.
  • Experience with daily reporting, field documentation, punch lists, RFIs, and change order support.
  • Proficiency with construction management software and mobile field apps (Procore, PlanGrid, Fieldwire, Buildertrend, or similar).
  • Basic scheduling and sequencing skills; familiarity with Microsoft Project or Primavera is an advantage.
  • Material tracking, inventory control, and basic procurement coordination.
  • Knowledge of standard construction methods, trades coordination, scaffolding, formwork, concrete, masonry, carpentry, and MEP interfaces.

  • Equipment and tool management, including minor preventive maintenance coordination.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; vocational/trade school certificates acceptable.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's degree or diploma in Construction Management, Building Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • Certifications such as OSHA 10/30, NCCER, First Aid/CPR, or apprenticeship credentials are a plus.
