Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Read, interpret and work from technical drawings, shop drawings, architectural plans and specifications to lay out, measure and mark timber components accurately to tight tolerances.
- Set out, cut and prepare timber, MDF, plywood, laminate and composite materials using hand tools and power tools (saws, routers, planers, thicknessers, jointers) to produce precise joinery components.
- Manufacture, assemble and install bespoke items such as doors, door frames, window frames, skirtings, architraves, staircases, fitted kitchens, wardrobes and built-in furniture both in the workshop and on site.
- Use jigs, fixtures and templates to ensure repeatable accuracy when machining components and to maintain consistent quality across production runs.
- Operate woodworking machines safely and efficiently, including table saws, band saws, spindle moulders, CNC routers and sanding equipment; carry out routine machine set-up and adjustments.
- Produce accurate shop work and site templates for complex items (e.g., stair components, curved profiles, or irregular openings) and transfer templates to finished pieces.
- Assemble joints using traditional and modern techniques (mortise and tenon, dovetail, dowel, biscuit, lamination, mechanical fixings and adhesives) and check for square, alignment and structural integrity.
- Fit and fix finished joinery on site, including setting out, levelling, scribing, trimming, bedding, sealing and final adjustment of locks, hinges, catches and hardware to manufacturer and regulatory standards.
- Prepare, apply and inspect surface finishes including priming, staining, varnishing and lacquering to meet specification and client expectations and to ensure durable, high-quality finishes.
- Carry out site surveys, take accurate site measurements, advise on material options and methods, and produce material take-offs to support quoting and production planning.
- Collaborate with project managers, estimators and workshop staff to sequence production, manage lead times and prioritize work to meet project milestones and client deadlines.
- Follow and enforce health & safety procedures including safe use of tools, machine guarding, PPE, COSHH requirements, manual handling protocols and site-specific safety plans.
- Inspect finished joinery items for fit, finish, quality and compliance with drawings and job specifications prior to installation or handover; document and rectify any defects.
- Maintain and service hand tools and power tools, perform preventative maintenance on machinery and report any defects to minimise downtime and ensure a safe working environment.
- Cut and prepare materials for trade finishes and secondary items (e.g., glass panels, metal fixings, seals) and coordinate with sub-contractors (glaziers, metalworkers, painters) where necessary.
- Interpret structural and architectural constraints when installing heavy items (e.g., staircases, timber frames) and coordinate lifting, bracketing and anchorage with site teams to ensure safe installations.
- Prepare items for transportation, pack securely, label and oversee delivery or handover to site to avoid damage and ensure components arrive ready for installation.
- Train, mentor and supervise junior joiners, apprentices and shop assistants by demonstrating techniques, reviewing work and providing constructive feedback to improve craft standards.
- Maintain accurate production records, timesheets, job cards and non-conformance reports; contribute to continuous improvement by suggesting process or layout changes to increase efficiency.
- Apply knowledge of building regulations and standards (e.g., fire doorsets, stair pitch regulations, escape routes) when manufacturing and installing joinery to ensure compliance.
- Undertake remedial or aftercare visits as needed to adjust, repair or replace joinery items following installation and to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Work flexibly across workshop and site environments, adapt to changing job requirements, and support multi-trade teams on larger projects when required.
Secondary Functions
- Support estimating teams with material lists and practical input on time and complexity for bespoke joinery quotations.
- Assist with stock control: receiving, inspecting and storing timber and consumables to minimise waste and maintain quality.
- Participate in pre-start meetings and toolbox talks to align with project safety targets and schedules.
- Support the organisation's quality control processes by completing checklists and participating in internal audits.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, suggesting improvements to workflow, tooling and materials to save time and reduce defects.
- Help maintain a clean, organised workshop and site areas, including correct disposal of off-cuts and recycling of timber waste.
- Collaborate with suppliers to source specialist materials, hardware and bespoke components to meet aesthetic or performance requirements.
- Provide after-sales advice to clients on care and maintenance of finished joinery items and recommend warranty or service solutions when necessary.
- Aid in the development of templates, standard details and production drawings to build a library of repeatable components for future jobs.
- Occasionally cover additional duties such as fitting external cladding, decking or lightweight timber framing where cross-skilled.
