Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform high and low voltage electrical cable jointing, termination, and repair on a variety of cable types including XLPE, PILC, and EPR, for both new installations and fault restoration.
  • Execute precise fusion and mechanical splicing on single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables to ensure minimal signal loss and optimal network performance.
  • Prepare cable ends by stripping back layers of insulation, conductors, and sheathing with meticulous attention to detail to prevent any nicks or damage.
  • Read, interpret, and work from complex electrical schematics, engineering drawings, and network plans to locate, identify, and prepare cables for jointing activities.
  • Install and assemble various types of jointing kits, including heat shrink, cold shrink, and resin-filled joints, according to strict manufacturer specifications and industry standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive post-installation testing using specialized equipment such as OTDRs (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer), VLF (Very Low Frequency) testers, and insulation resistance meters to verify the integrity of the joint or termination.
  • Identify, locate, and diagnose faults within underground electrical and fiber optic networks using Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) and other fault location techniques.
  • Work safely in a variety of challenging environments, including confined spaces like manholes and joint bays, at heights on utility poles, and in excavated trenches.
  • Adhere rigorously to all health and safety protocols, including conducting risk assessments, implementing safe systems of work, and using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Perform phasing and spiking procedures on LV/HV cables to confirm they are de-energized and safe to work on, following strict utility company procedures.
  • Install link boxes, disconnect boxes, and other network connection hardware as part of new construction or network reinforcement projects.
  • Manage the on-site work area, ensuring it is secure, clean, and organized to maintain a safe environment for the team and the public.
  • Complete detailed and accurate daily work reports, as-built drawings, and test documentation to ensure robust records for compliance, billing, and future maintenance.
  • Liaise with network control centers, project managers, and other on-site personnel to coordinate work activities and ensure minimal disruption to services.
  • Operate and maintain specialized vehicles, tools, and equipment, including cable winches, hydraulic crimping tools, and test sets, ensuring they are calibrated and in good working order.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide on-the-job technical support and mentorship to apprentices and junior technicians, fostering a culture of skill development and safety consciousness.
  • Assist in the planning and scoping of new installation or network upgrade projects by providing expert input on jointing requirements, material selection, and potential challenges.
  • Manage and maintain a personal inventory of jointing kits, tools, and consumable materials, ensuring all necessary equipment is available for assigned tasks.
  • Participate in emergency call-out rotations to respond to network faults and power outages, often working unsociable hours and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Stay current with new jointing technologies, materials, and industry best practices through continuous professional development and training.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of a company's jointing procedures and safety documentation.
  • Collaborate with civil engineering teams to ensure that trenching, ducting, and joint bay construction meet the technical requirements for cable installation and jointing.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • High & Low Voltage Cable Jointing: Proficient in jointing and terminating on a wide range of power cables up to 33kV or higher, including proficiency with different insulation types (PILC, XLPE).
  • Fiber Optic Splicing: Expertise in fusion and mechanical splicing techniques, including the use of cleavers, strippers, and fusion splicers for minimal dB loss.
  • Cable Testing & Fault Location: Skilled in using test equipment like OTDR, TDR, VLF testers, and Meggers to certify installations and pinpoint network faults accurately.
  • Schematic & Blueprint Interpretation: Ability to read, understand, and execute work based on complex technical drawings, network maps, and utility plans.
  • Confined Space Entry: Certified and experienced in working safely within confined spaces, including knowledge of gas detection and rescue procedures.
  • Switching and Linking Operations: Authorized and competent to perform switching, linking, and isolation procedures on live or potentially live electrical networks.
  • Use of Specialized Tooling: Dexterity and skill in using hydraulic crimpers, cable strippers, heat guns, and other precision tools of the trade.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent, coupled with a successfully completed, recognized Apprenticeship Program in Cable Jointing or a related electrical trade.

Preferred Education:

Associate's Degree or a technical diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Systems, or Telecommunications.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

3-7 years of dedicated, hands-on experience as a Cable Jointer or Fiber Splicer in a utility, telecommunications, or heavy industrial construction environment.

Extensive experience working on live LV/HV networks. Holding current manufacturer certifications (e.g., from 3M, Prysmian, Tyco/TE Connectivity) and utility-specific authorizations is highly desirable.
