Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive, in-depth research for articles, features, and broadcast segments, utilizing online databases, public records, and other sources to gather background information.
  • Provide direct support to senior journalists and editors throughout the story development process, assisting from initial concept and pitching through to final publication or broadcast.

  • Meticulously fact-check all content for accuracy prior to publication, verifying names, dates, statistics, and statements to uphold journalistic integrity.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and confirm interviews with sources, subject matter experts, and public figures on behalf of the news team, managing complex calendars.
  • Attend press conferences, community meetings, and other events as a representative of the publication to gather information, take detailed notes, and identify key takeaways.
  • Actively participate in editorial brainstorming sessions, contributing fresh, well-researched ideas for new stories, unique angles, and long-form investigative projects.
  • Write short-form content under editorial supervision, such as news briefs, online updates, event listings, and captions for multimedia elements.
  • Manage and organize large volumes of digital and physical assets, including research materials, interview notes, contact lists, and multimedia files, for easy team access.
  • Assist with the production of multimedia content by sourcing relevant images and video, performing basic edits, and creating simple graphics to accompany stories.
  • Proofread and copy-edit articles and other content to correct for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and ensure adherence to the organization's style guide.
  • Maintain and update the shared editorial calendar, meticulously tracking story progress, deadlines, and publication schedules across various platforms.

Secondary Functions

  • Build and diligently maintain a comprehensive database of contacts, including sources, industry experts, and public relations professionals.
  • Handle a variety of administrative tasks for the newsroom, such as managing incoming correspondence, booking travel for reporters, and processing expense reports.
  • Act as a first point of contact for the news desk, fielding calls and emails from the public, screening for relevance, and directing them to the appropriate person.
