The Journeyman Millwright is a certified, highly skilled trades professional who serves as the backbone of industrial maintenance operations. This role is fundamentally responsible for ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of all stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment within a facility. The Journeyman Millwright applies a deep, hands-on understanding of mechanical systems, precision instrumentation, and fabrication techniques to install, maintain, diagnose, and repair complex equipment. This position is both proactive, executing robust preventive maintenance programs to mitigate downtime, and reactive, providing expert troubleshooting to resolve critical equipment failures with speed and precision.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, position, and commission new industrial machinery and heavy equipment, meticulously following technical drawings, blueprints, and manufacturer specifications to ensure proper setup.
  • Perform high-precision alignment on rotating equipment such as pumps, motors, compressors, and gearboxes, utilizing laser alignment systems and dial indicators to minimize operational stress and extend component life.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system failures by systematically analyzing symptoms, interpreting schematics, and utilizing advanced diagnostic tools to pinpoint root causes.
  • Execute comprehensive preventive and predictive maintenance schedules on all production and facility equipment, including vibration analysis and thermography, to ensure optimal performance and prevent unplanned downtime.
  • Dismantle, overhaul, and reassemble intricate machinery and equipment, skillfully replacing worn or defective components like bearings, seals, bushings, gears, and shafts to restore full functionality.
  • Read and interpret complex technical documents, including engineering blueprints, P&IDs, isometric drawings, and service manuals, to understand equipment operation, assembly, and repair procedures.
  • Fabricate and modify machine parts to precise tolerances using a full range of machine shop tools, including lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, and drill presses.
  • Perform certified structural and maintenance welding (SMAW, TIG, MIG) and torch-cutting tasks to repair or fabricate structural components, machine guards, brackets, and equipment frames as required.
  • Safely plan and execute complex rigging and hoisting operations, operating cranes, chain falls, jacks, and mobile equipment to move and position heavy machinery and components during installation or repair.
  • Conduct thorough operational tests and post-repair inspections on equipment to verify that it functions correctly and meets all safety, quality, and performance standards before being returned to service.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair industrial fluid power systems, including tracing and repairing hydraulic and pneumatic circuits and replacing pumps, valves, actuators, and cylinders.
  • Work with high-tolerance machine components, using a variety of precision measuring instruments like micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and feeler gauges to ensure parts meet exact specifications.
  • Respond to urgent emergency breakdown calls in a dynamic production environment, working efficiently under pressure to minimize costly production losses and restore equipment functionality.
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot a wide array of power transmission systems, including V-belts, synchronous belts, roller chains, sprockets, and complex gear drives, ensuring proper tension and alignment.
  • Grout and anchor machinery securely to foundations, ensuring stability, vibration dampening, and adherence to all engineering requirements.
  • Assemble, install, and maintain various types of material handling and conveyor systems, including belt, roller, screw, and chain conveyors, and perform ongoing maintenance and repairs.
  • Collaborate directly with engineers, project managers, and production personnel to identify opportunities for equipment improvement and implement modifications to enhance safety, reliability, and performance.
  • Perform industrial pipefitting tasks as needed, including the ability to measure, cut, thread, and install piping for hydraulic, pneumatic, and process fluid systems.
  • Inspect and assess the condition of equipment during routine maintenance, identifying potential issues and recommending proactive repairs or replacements.
  • Move and install machinery using a variety of methods including rollers, skates, and heavy-duty lift trucks in environments where crane access is not possible.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain detailed and accurate maintenance logs, work order notes, and service reports within a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to ensure data integrity and history tracking.
  • Actively champion and participate in workplace safety programs, conduct job-site risk assessments, and strictly adhere to all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and company safety policies.
  • Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and on-the-job training to apprentice millwrights and other maintenance team members to foster skill development across the team.
  • Assist the maintenance planner and supervisor in managing the inventory of spare parts, materials, and supplies, identifying critical components and recommending reorder points.
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for significant equipment failures to help develop and implement effective long-term corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • State/Provincial-issued Journeyman Millwright Certificate (or equivalent, such as a Red Seal Endorsement).

Preferred Education:

  • Technical Diploma or Associate's Degree in a related mechanical field.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
4-10 years of documented experience as a certified millwright in an industrial, manufacturing, or heavy construction environment.

Preferred:
Extensive experience within a specific heavy industry sector (e.g., pulp and paper, mining, food and beverage processing, power generation, or automotive manufacturing). Additional certifications in welding (e.g., CWB, AWS), rigging, or predictive maintenance technologies are highly valued.
