Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct, manage, and coordinate all daily security operations and activities within court facilities to ensure a safe and secure environment for judges, employees, and the public.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate comprehensive security plans, emergency response protocols, and standard operating procedures for the Judicial Division.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate a diverse team of subordinate supervisors (Sergeants) and line-level personnel (Deputies/Officers), managing scheduling, assignments, and performance.
  • Act as the primary Incident Commander during emergencies, critical incidents, or security breaches within the judicial complex, coordinating response efforts until relieved by a higher authority.
  • Serve as the primary security liaison to the judiciary, court administration, and other justice partners, fostering collaborative relationships to address security needs and concerns.
  • Plan, coordinate, and command security details for high-risk or high-profile trials, ensuring the safety of all participants and the integrity of the proceedings.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget for the Court Security Division, overseeing procurement, resource allocation, and fiscal accountability for personnel and equipment.
  • Conduct and oversee complex administrative and internal investigations into personnel complaints, use-of-force incidents, and policy violations, ensuring thoroughness and fairness.
  • Formulate and recommend updates to departmental policies and procedures related to court security to adapt to evolving threats and best practices.
  • Oversee the operational readiness, maintenance, and strategic implementation of all physical security systems, including magnetometers, X-ray scanners, CCTV, and access control technology.
  • Prepare and review detailed administrative reports, operational summaries, incident analyses, and performance metrics for department leadership and judicial administration.
  • Manage all personnel functions for the division, including participating in hiring panels, promotional processes, disciplinary actions, and career development planning.
  • Conduct regular and unannounced inspections of personnel, posts, and facilities to ensure unwavering compliance with established standards and protocols.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive training programs for all court security personnel, covering topics such as use of force, de-escalation, courtroom decorum, and emergency procedures.
  • Perform ongoing threat and vulnerability assessments of court facilities and judicial officers to identify potential risks and recommend effective mitigation strategies.
  • Represent the Sheriff's Office or department in multi-agency meetings, judicial security committees, and public forums concerning court security matters.
  • Manage the secure movement and holding of in-custody persons within the courthouse, ensuring the safety of staff and the prevention of escapes or disruptions.
  • Review and approve all official reports, timekeeping records, and administrative documents generated by the division to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure all personnel maintain the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and customer service in their interactions with the diverse population of a courthouse.
  • Coordinate and execute emergency drills, including active shooter response and facility evacuations, in partnership with court staff and external emergency services.
  • Manage the inventory and issuance of all divisional equipment, including firearms, radios, vehicles, and specialized security devices, ensuring proper maintenance and accountability.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
