Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  1. Develop and deliver structured, age-appropriate judo training sessions that progress technical skills (ashi-waza, nage-waza, ne-waza), tactical awareness, randori, and kata preparation while ensuring clear session objectives and measurable outcomes.
  2. Create and implement long-term athlete development plans (LTAD) and periodised training cycles for individuals and squads aimed at peak performance for club, regional and national competitions.
  3. Coach athletes through competition preparation including match strategy, weight management guidance (where appropriate), competition simulation, warm-up protocols and post-competition analysis.
  4. Provide individualized technical feedback using video analysis, performance metrics and targeted drills to accelerate skill acquisition and correct technical faults.
  5. Assess athlete performance regularly, maintain detailed training logs and progress records, and use objective testing (fitness, strength, mobility) to inform training adjustments.
  6. Design and supervise strength and conditioning programs specific to judo demands, coordinating with strength & conditioning specialists or physiotherapists to reduce injury risk and enhance power, endurance and mobility.
  7. Lead warm-up, cool-down and injury prevention routines; recognise early signs of overtraining and implement recovery strategies in consultation with medical staff.
  8. Plan and oversee club grading and belt promotion processes, ensuring assessments are fair, technically rigorous and aligned with national federation standards.
  9. Manage athlete welfare, safeguarding and child protection responsibilities including regular communication with parents/guardians, confidential record-keeping, and compliance with background checks and safeguarding certification.
  10. Recruit, retain and mentor assistant coaches, volunteers and junior instructors; delegate session responsibilities, provide feedback, and run regular coach development and CPD activities.
  11. Organise and coordinate club events such as internal competitions, seminars, grading nights and social activities to build community engagement and athlete motivation.
  12. Liaise with schools, community groups and local authorities to promote judo participation, run outreach programs and grow membership pipelines.
  13. Ensure all club equipment is safe, maintained and correctly used; manage inventory, order new equipment and maintain a budget for training resources.
  14. Keep abreast of national and international judo rules, IJF/BJA/USJF regulations, anti-doping policies and competition draw procedures; ensure athletes and club sessions conform to current standards.
  15. Create and maintain clear communication channels including emails, newsletters, social media posts and a club website to inform members of schedules, events and policy changes.
  16. Represent the club or programme at federation meetings, coach forums and competitions; build relationships with other clubs, regional coaches and selectors.
  17. Build recruitment and retention strategies, including trial sessions, marketing activities and partnership development to increase membership and diversify athlete pathways.
  18. Prepare budgets, manage class timetables and fee collection processes, and report on club financials to board members or club owners as required.
  19. Deliver first-response care for minor injuries and coordinate referrals to physiotherapists or medical professionals for more serious injuries; keep up-to-date first aid certification.
  20. Mentor athletes on competition mindset, goal setting, time management and sports psychology techniques to support consistent performance under pressure.
  21. Conduct regular risk assessments of training spaces and competitions and update safety protocols for training, travel and competition environments.
  22. Monitor and evaluate coaching impact using KPIs such as member retention, podium results, athlete progression metrics and participant satisfaction, and iterate on program design.

Secondary Functions

  • Support club administrative tasks such as scheduling classes, maintaining membership databases, and processing registrations and waivers.
  • Contribute to the club’s strategic plan and annual operating goals, including outreach, membership targets and competition objectives.
  • Assist with social media content creation, photography/video collection for promotional and educational use, and basic editing for training reviews.
  • Support fundraising initiatives, sponsorship proposals and community grant applications to secure resources for travel and equipment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Secondary education (high school diploma) with accredited coaching qualifications and relevant sport experience.

Experience Requirements

Certifications in safeguarding, first aid, and recognised national federation coaching awards are strongly preferred.
