Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design and implement comprehensive, age- and skill-appropriate Judo curricula for diverse groups, including children (Yonen), youth (Shonen), and adults.
  • Conduct structured, engaging, and dynamic group and private Judo classes, ensuring a balance between technical instruction, randori (free practice), and physical conditioning.
  • Demonstrate and break down a wide range of Kodokan Judo techniques, including throws (Nage-waza), holds (Osaekomi-waza), chokes (Shime-waza), and arm locks (Kansetsu-waza).
  • Foster a safe, disciplined, and respectful dojo environment that upholds the traditions and etiquette of Judo.
  • Teach and rigorously enforce safety protocols, particularly the proper execution and use of break-falls (Ukemi), to minimize the risk of injury for all participants.
  • Provide constructive, individualized feedback to students to correct their form, improve their technical understanding, and enhance their strategic application of Judo.
  • Evaluate student readiness and conduct formal examinations (Shinsa) for belt promotions, maintaining the integrity of the ranking system.
  • Develop and mentor students for competition, teaching tournament rules, scoring, strategy, and fostering sportsmanship.
  • Accompany and coach students at local, regional, and national tournaments, providing ringside guidance and support.
  • Instill the philosophical principles of Judo, including discipline, perseverance, respect, and humility, connecting them to life outside the dojo.
  • Develop and maintain lesson plans that ensure a logical progression of skills and knowledge throughout the curriculum.
  • Manage class dynamics effectively, ensuring all students feel included, challenged, and supported regardless of their natural ability or experience level.
  • Stay current with developments in Judo pedagogy, coaching science, and any rule changes from governing bodies like the IJF or national federations.

  • Maintain detailed records of student attendance, progress, and belt promotions to track development and inform future instruction.
  • Actively promote a culture of 'Jita Kyoei' (mutual welfare and benefit) by encouraging senior students to mentor junior students.
  • Adapt teaching methods and techniques to accommodate students with different learning styles, physical abilities, and personal goals.
  • Organize and lead specialized workshops or seminars on specific aspects of Judo, such as Kata, self-defense applications, or advanced competition tactics.
  • Systematically introduce and teach the formal sets of pre-arranged techniques (Kata), such as Nage-no-Kata, as required for rank progression.
  • Ensure all training equipment, including the tatami (mats), uniforms (judogi), and any other gear, is well-maintained and safe for use.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with parents, providing regular updates on their children's progress, behavior, and personal growth.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with the daily administrative and operational tasks of the dojo, including membership inquiries, registration, and scheduling.
  • Contribute to the organization's marketing and community outreach efforts by participating in public demonstrations, school visits, and promotional events.
  • Support membership retention strategies by building strong relationships with students and their families and fostering a strong sense of community.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities to contribute to the overall strategy and improvement of the martial arts program.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Kodokan Judo Expertise: Deep, demonstrable knowledge of the full curriculum of Judo techniques, including the Gokyo-no-waza and key Katame-waza.
  • Pedagogical Skill: Proven ability to structure lesson plans and teach complex motor skills to various age groups and abilities.
  • Ukemi Proficiency: Mastery in performing and teaching all forms of break-falls to ensure student safety.

  • Certified coaching credentials from a national governing body.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5+ years of consistent experience as a primary or assistant Judo instructor.
