Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Accurately operate and monitor automatic or semi-automatic filling machines to measure and dispense liquids or powders into jugs to meet specified fill levels, minimizing overfills and product waste.
- Load and align empty jugs on conveyor lines, ensuring correct orientation, spacing, and timely feed to avoid line stoppages and maintain takt time.
- Install, inspect, and verify caps, seals, tamper-evident features and closures using torque tools or automated cappers to guarantee proper sealing and package integrity.
- Perform in-line quality checks on fill levels, cap tightness, labels, and general jug condition; isolate and tag defective units and coordinate rework or disposal per SOP.
- Apply and verify accurate product labels, lot codes, and barcodes using manual labelers or automatic applicators to ensure traceability and regulatory compliance.
- Changeover packaging equipment between SKUs, including adjusting guides, nozzles, capping heads and label parameters, following documented changeover procedures to minimize downtime.
- Operate shrink-wrap machines, case packers, stretch wrappers and pallet strapping equipment to prepare jugs for shipment, ensuring secure loads and optimal pallet patterns.
- Stage and palletize finished goods according to production plans and pallet configuration guidelines; wrap and mark pallets with clear product, lot, and destination information.
- Record production data, fill counts, rejects, downtime events and sanitation checks using production logs, paper records or electronic MES/WMS systems to maintain accurate traceability and KPI tracking.
- Follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and company sanitation schedules to prevent contamination and ensure product safety.
- Conduct routine machine checks and basic preventative maintenance (cleaning, lubrication, simple adjustments) and promptly notify maintenance for mechanical issues to keep equipment operating reliably.
- Meet or exceed daily and hourly production targets while maintaining quality standards and minimizing defects, rework, and material loss.
- Safely move raw materials, jugs, closures and finished pallets using pallet jacks or sit-down forklifts (if certified), ensuring proper stacking, weight distribution and safe travel paths.
- Participate in line changeover and start-up activities including pre-run checks, test fills and sample verification to confirm proper operation prior to full production.
- Adhere to all safety policies and OSHA requirements: wear required PPE, identify and report hazards, participate in lockout/tagout procedures, and support safety audits.
- Follow first-in-first-out (FIFO) inventory rotation practices for raw materials and packaging supplies to maintain product freshness and proper lot control.
- Inspect incoming packaging materials (jugs, caps, labels) for defects or nonconformances and report quality issues to supervisors to prevent downstream problems.
- Assist with sampling and handing off product samples to Quality for lab testing (pH, microbial, fill-volume checks) and support corrective actions when required.
- Communicate effectively with upstream and downstream team members (fillers, labelers, case packers, forklift operators, QC and supervisors) to maintain continuous flow and resolve minor production issues.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, suggesting improvements to reduce waste, improve ergonomics, increase uptime and streamline changeovers.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, perform scheduled sanitation and end-of-shift clean-up, and ensure all tools and spare parts are returned to designated locations.
- Train and mentor new packers or cross-train into related packaging roles to build flexible teams and support coverage across shifts.
Secondary Functions
- Support inventory counts and cycle counting of packaging supplies and finished goods; update records in WMS or ERP when required and escalate discrepancies.
- Assist quality and production teams with root cause analysis for recurring defects and participate in corrective action plans to eliminate causes of waste.
- Contribute to packaging material optimization efforts by testing alternative trays, caps or pallet patterns to reduce material cost and increase efficiency.
- Help coordinate with shipping and warehouse for pallet staging, loading sequences and special handling instructions for fragile or temperature-sensitive jugs.
- Complete required production, cleaning and safety documentation on time and maintain legible logs for regulatory inspections and internal audits.
- Support seasonal demand surges by working flexible hours or overtime as needed to meet customer delivery commitments.
- Participate in safety, quality and equipment training sessions to stay current on best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Assist maintenance and engineering during equipment changeovers and minor troubleshooting, documenting observations that may speed repair or adjustment.
- Provide feedback on packaging defects related to labeling alignment, cap fit, or fill variability and document frequency and severity for trend analysis.
- Support sample retention and quarantine processes when quality deviations occur, ensuring accurate labeling and secure storage pending investigation.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficient operation of liquid and dry product filling machines (automatic and semi-automatic) and understanding of fill accuracy and dosing controls.
- Experience with capping equipment, torque tools and verification procedures for tamper-evident caps and child-resistant closures.
