Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately sort jugs by SKU, size, color, label, lot code and destination using visual inspection and barcode/RFID scanning to meet production throughput targets and minimize mis-shipments.
  • Inspect each jug for defects (cracks, warping, missing caps, leaks, incorrect labels) and remove non-conforming items from the line, documenting defects per quality procedures.
  • Operate conveyor belts, diverters, chutes and manual sorting stations to route jugs to correct packing, rework or disposal areas while maintaining flow and minimizing downtime.
  • Scan and record SKU, lot number and quantity information using handheld scanners or WMS terminals to maintain accurate inventory and traceability records.
  • Apply or verify labels, shrink wrap, tamper-evident seals and lot codes on jugs according to packing guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Stage sorted jugs onto pallets or packaging lines following palletization patterns and load limits to maximize storage efficiency and ensure safe transportation.
  • Communicate discrepancies in order, label, or product information to the supervisor and quality team immediately and participate in corrective actions.
  • Perform weight checks, sample measurements and visual inspections as part of in-line quality assurance and record results in logs or electronic systems.
  • Maintain expected cycle times and productivity standards; meet daily sorting quotas while preserving accuracy and product quality.
  • Follow FIFO, FEFO or other inventory rotation procedures to ensure correct product aging and prevent expired or obsolete stock from being processed.
  • Support line changeovers by clearing previous SKU remnants, confirming new labels, and rebalancing conveyor speeds and chutes for the incoming product.
  • Assist with packing, taping and sealing cases or crates containing sorted jugs when required to meet shipping deadlines.
  • Report and tag damaged packaging or product for quarantine per facility procedures, ensuring suspect inventory is isolated and logged.
  • Participate in daily pre-shift safety and production briefings, and implement corrective recommendations from QA and operations leadership.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the sorting area, conveyors and staging zones; perform routine inspection and basic cleaning to avoid contamination and product damage.
  • Complete production paperwork, count sheets and digital logs accurately and on time to support inventory reconciliation and audit readiness.
  • Follow all required PPE, lockout/tagout and machine-guarding procedures; stop the line and report hazards immediately to supervisors.
  • Support cycle counts and physical inventories by staging and verifying sorted inventory when auditors or inventory teams are present.
  • Coordinate with forklift operators and shipping teams to ensure sorted pallets are moved to the correct dock or storage bay in a timely manner.
  • Train new sorters on proper inspection criteria, conveyor operations, scanning procedures and safety practices under the direction of the lead or supervisor.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process, layout or tooling changes to increase throughput, reduce damage, or improve ergonomics.
  • Document rework, scrap and yield issues and contribute to root cause investigations when repeated sorting defects are observed.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc packing requests and assist with overflow shipping during peak demand or staff shortages.
  • Help maintain and update simple work instructions, SOPs and visual aids at the sort station to improve first-time accuracy for seasonal hires.
  • Collect sample jugs for laboratory or quality testing as requested by QA and assist with sample labeling and chain-of-custody documentation.
  • Perform basic minor maintenance such as removing jams, clearing debris from conveyor belts and reporting mechanical issues for preventive maintenance.
  • Assist with inbound receiving checks by verifying pallet labels, counts, and condition of incoming jugs before they enter the production flow.
  • Participate in cross-training efforts to work temporarily in adjacent roles (packing, counting, or labeling) to support uninterrupted operations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Hands-on experience sorting and inspecting containers (jugs, bottles, cans) in high-volume production or warehouse environments.
  • Proficient use of handheld barcode/RFID scanners and basic familiarity with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) such as NetSuite, Manhattan, Fishbowl or similar.
  • Competence reading SKUs, lot codes, expiration dates, and label specifications with 99% accuracy.
  • Basic understanding of inventory control practices (FIFO/FEFO) and traceability requirements.
  • Comfortable operating and working safely around conveyors, diverters, pallet jacks and manual roller tables.
  • Knowledge of packaging and palletization best practices, including stretch-wrapping and load stability.
  • Experience performing simple quality checks: weight verification, visual defect detection, dimensional checks.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols (PPE), and sanitation guidelines (especially for food/chemical products).
  • Basic computer literacy for entering counts, reading digital pick tickets and following electronic SOPs.
  • Forklift operation (powered industrial truck) certification preferred or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Familiarity with basic reporting: production logs, defect logs, and non-conformance reports.
  • Experience with shrink wrapping, labeling equipment or manual label application is a plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Vocational certificate or short course in manufacturing, logistics or warehouse operations.

Experience Requirements
