Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Skillfully set up, operate, and monitor high-speed automated packaging equipment, including fillers, cappers, labelers, and case packers, according to established production schedules.
- Conduct frequent and meticulous quality control checks on products and packaging materials to ensure they meet precise specifications for fill volume, cap torque, label placement, and code date legibility.
- Perform routine troubleshooting and minor mechanical adjustments to packaging machinery to minimize downtime and maintain optimal operational efficiency.
- Execute thorough cleaning and sanitation procedures (CIP/SIP) on all equipment and surrounding work areas in strict accordance with GMP and food safety protocols.
- Accurately document all production and quality data, including machine settings, output counts, downtime logs, and quality inspection results, using both manual logs and digital systems.
- Collaborate effectively with the quality assurance team to identify, isolate, and resolve any product or packaging non-conformances in a timely manner.
- Safely and efficiently manage the supply of raw packaging materials (e.g., bottles, caps, labels, boxes) to the production line to ensure continuous operation.
- Adhere uncompromisingly to all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and food safety standards (GMP, HACCP) to create a safe and compliant work environment.
- Participate actively in preventative maintenance tasks alongside the maintenance team to enhance equipment reliability and longevity.
- Monitor machine performance and output, making necessary adjustments to speed and controls to achieve production targets and KPIs without compromising quality.
- Perform detailed pre-operation inspections and startup checklists to ensure all equipment is safe and ready for the production run.
- Assist in the training and mentoring of new team members on standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and equipment operation.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement within the packaging area to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and improve safety.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with line leads, supervisors, and maintenance personnel regarding equipment status, production issues, and material needs.
- Operate material handling equipment, such as pallet jacks or forklifts (if certified), to move raw materials and finished goods as required.
- Conduct and document product changeovers, which involves clearing the line, changing machine parts, and setting up the equipment for a new product or package size.
- Ensure that all safety guards and emergency stops on machinery are in place and functioning correctly before and during operation.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and audit-ready work area at all times, following 5S principles or similar organizational methodologies.
- Collect product samples at specified intervals for laboratory analysis, ensuring they are properly labeled and delivered to the Quality department.
- Respond promptly to machine alarms, diagnose the root cause of the stoppage, and take appropriate corrective action to restart production.
- Verify that the correct product, packaging components, and labels are being used for each specific production order to prevent costly errors.
- Contribute to team meetings and continuous improvement initiatives, providing valuable frontline feedback and suggestions.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in periodic inventory counts of packaging materials and supplies.
- Participate in scheduled safety drills and contribute to the plant's safety committee.
- Support the research and development team by running trial productions for new products or packaging formats.
- Provide operational support to other production lines or departments as needed during periods of high demand or staff shortages.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficiency in operating and adjusting high-speed packaging machinery (fillers, labelers, case packers).
- Strong understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and food safety principles (HACCP).
- Basic mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and performing minor equipment repairs.
- Ability to perform precise quality control tests and measurements.
- Knowledge of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and other industrial safety procedures.
- Competence in reading and interpreting production schedules and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
