Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough inspections of all incoming raw materials, including fruit concentrates, purees, sweeteners, and packaging, to verify they meet precise specifications for quality, safety, and authenticity before being accepted into inventory.
  • Perform a comprehensive suite of analytical tests on in-process and finished juice products, including Brix (sugar content), pH, acidity, and vitamin C levels, using laboratory equipment like refractometers and titrators.
  • Execute detailed organoleptic evaluations (sensory testing) of juice samples at critical stages, assessing color, clarity, aroma, and flavor against established gold standards to ensure consistency and consumer appeal.
  • Meticulously monitor and document critical control points (CCPs) as defined by the facility's HACCP plan, such as pasteurization temperatures and times, to mitigate food safety risks.
  • Collect, prepare, and send samples for microbiological testing (e.g., yeast, mold, coliforms) to internal or third-party labs, and interpret results to confirm product safety and stability.
  • Maintain highly accurate and organized records of all quality control checks, test results, and production data, ensuring documentation is compliant with internal policies and regulatory requirements (FDA, USDA).
  • Place non-conforming ingredients, in-process materials, or finished products on hold, clearly documenting the issue and initiating the deviation investigation process in collaboration with production and management.
  • Calibrate, clean, and maintain all quality control laboratory instruments and equipment on a regular schedule to ensure the ongoing accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Routinely audit production lines to verify adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and sanitation standards, providing immediate corrective feedback when necessary.
  • Inspect the integrity of finished product packaging, including cap torque, seal integrity, label accuracy, date coding, and case packing, to ensure product protection and regulatory compliance.
  • Review and verify production batch records for completeness and accuracy, ensuring all quality checks have been performed and any deviations have been properly documented and resolved.
  • Assist in the investigation of customer complaints by retrieving retain samples, reviewing batch records, and performing re-testing to help determine the root cause of the quality issue.
  • Champion a food safety culture on the production floor by coaching operators on proper quality check procedures, sampling techniques, and the importance of their role in maintaining quality.
  • Monitor and verify the effectiveness of sanitation procedures (SSOPs) by conducting pre-operational inspections and ATP swabbing of equipment surfaces to ensure a hygienic processing environment.
  • Prepare and maintain stocks of laboratory reagents and chemical solutions required for analytical testing, ensuring proper labeling, storage, and handling according to safety protocols.
  • Manage the library of retained samples from each production batch, organizing them for easy retrieval for shelf-life studies, complaint investigations, or further testing.
  • Perform periodic glass and brittle plastic audits throughout the facility to identify and mitigate risks of physical contamination in the product.
  • Validate the accuracy and functionality of in-line monitoring equipment, such as metal detectors and X-ray machines, through routine checks with standardized test pieces.
  • Report any food safety concerns, quality deviations, or equipment malfunctions immediately to the Quality Assurance Supervisor or Manager for prompt resolution.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying trends in quality data, suggesting process enhancements, and assisting in the implementation of new procedures or technologies.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the Research & Development team by performing quality tests and providing sensory feedback on new juice formulations and ingredient trials.
  • Participate actively in internal and third-party audits (e.g., SQF, BRC, organic) by gathering required documentation and explaining QC processes to auditors.
  • Contribute to formal sensory evaluation panels for shelf-life studies and competitive product analysis, providing structured feedback on product attributes over time.
  • Support the training of new production and warehouse team members on critical quality checkpoints, GMPs, and food safety fundamentals.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

1-3 years in a quality control or laboratory role within a food, beverage, or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.

Preferred:

Direct experience with juice, dairy, or other liquid food processing. Working knowledge of GFSI standards such as SQF, BRC, or FSSC 22000.
