Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive ground school instruction for first-time jumpers, including tandem and Accelerated Freefall (AFF) students, covering all aspects of the jump from exit to landing.
  • Perform tandem skydives, ensuring the student is properly secured, briefed, and comfortable throughout the entire process, from aircraft boarding to post-jump debriefing.
  • Execute instructional duties for the Accelerated Freefall (AFF) program, providing in-air guidance, stability assistance, and immediate feedback to students during freefall.
  • Meticulously inspect and fit all student and personal skydiving equipment before each jump, including harnesses, altimeters, and automatic activation devices (AADs).
  • Demonstrate and drill emergency procedures with students on the ground until proficiency is achieved, ensuring they can react appropriately to potential in-air situations.
  • Provide clear, concise, and calm communication to students and passengers during high-stress situations, including the aircraft ride, exit, freefall, and canopy flight.
  • Evaluate student performance and progression, accurately logging all required training milestones and providing constructive feedback for improvement.
  • Manage in-air emergencies with composure and expertise, prioritizing the safety of the student and oneself above all else.
  • Pilot tandem and student canopies safely to the designated landing area, providing clear landing instructions to the student to ensure a soft and injury-free touchdown.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate logbooks for both personal jumps and student training progression in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Act as an in-air videographer or photographer when required, capturing the student's experience while maintaining all safety and instructional priorities.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and United States Parachute Association (USPA) Basic Safety Requirements.
  • Assist with "spotting" the aircraft, which involves directing the pilot to the correct position over the ground for a safe exit and a predictable canopy ride to the landing area.
  • Conduct thorough post-jump debriefing sessions with students to review their performance, answer questions, and reinforce learning objectives.
  • Maintain personal currency and proficiency by actively jumping and participating in continuing education and recurrent training programs.
  • Perform functional checks and basic maintenance on all instructional equipment, reporting any signs of wear, damage, or malfunction to the appropriate staff rigger or manager immediately.
  • Participate in and contribute to daily safety briefings with all dropzone staff to discuss weather conditions, operational plans, and any potential hazards.
  • Serve as a positive ambassador for the sport of skydiving and the dropzone, fostering a welcoming, supportive, and professional environment for all customers and staff.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to licensed skydivers seeking to improve their skills in various disciplines.
  • Operate aircraft doors and manage jumper exit procedures, ensuring an orderly and safe departure from the aircraft at altitude.
  • Stay current with evolving skydiving techniques, equipment technology, and safety procedures through continuous professional development.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with manifest operations, including checking in jumpers, processing payments, and organizing load assignments.
  • Support ground crew with operational tasks, such as aircraft fueling, gear organization, and maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities.
  • Contribute to the dropzone’s marketing and social media efforts by providing photos, videos, and positive customer testimonials.
  • Mentor newly licensed skydivers, helping them integrate into the dropzone community and continue their progression in the sport.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • USPA Tandem Instructor Rating
  • USPA Accelerated Freefall (AFF) Instructor Rating

  • Valid USPA D-License (or C-License for certain instructional roles)
  • Proficiency in packing main and reserve parachutes (FAA Rigger Certificate highly desirable)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Minimum of 3 years of active participation in the sport of skydiving.
  • A verifiable log of at least 500 freefall skydives.
  • Minimum of a USPA C-License, with a D-License required for Tandem instruction.

Preferred:

  • Experience as an instructor at multiple dropzones or in varied operational environments.
  • Logbook showing 1000+ jumps, with significant experience in different weather conditions.
  • Additional ratings such as IAD/S-L Instructor, Coach Examiner, or Tandem Examiner.
  • Possession of an FAA Senior or Master Parachute Rigger certificate.
