🎯 Role Definition

The Junction Painter is a cornerstone of public road safety and transportation efficiency. This isn't just about painting lines; it's about interpreting complex plans and applying markings with absolute precision to guide drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians safely through complex intersections, parking lots, and airfields. You are the craftsperson whose work prevents accidents, reduces confusion, and ensures the smooth flow of traffic day and night. This role demands a steady hand, a keen eye for detail, and a deep commitment to safety and quality in a dynamic, outdoor work environment.

📈 Career Progression

Typical Career Path

Entry Point From:

  • General Construction Laborer
  • Traffic Control Flagger
  • Landscaping Crew Member

Advancement To:

  • Pavement Marking Lead Hand / Foreman
  • Field Supervisor
  • Project Manager

Lateral Moves:

  • Traffic Control Technician
  • Heavy Equipment Operator
  • Sign Installation Specialist

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and maintain a variety of pavement marking equipment, including walk-behind stripers, long-line trucks, and thermoplastic applicators, ensuring they are clean and in optimal working condition.
  • Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and layout schematics to accurately establish the placement of lines, symbols, and other required road markings at junctions and on highways.
  • Precisely apply various materials such as thermoplastic, water-based paint, epoxy, and preformed plastic tape according to project specifications and MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) standards.
  • Prepare road surfaces for marking application, which includes cleaning, sweeping, grinding old markings, and applying sealant or primer to ensure maximum adhesion and longevity.
  • Execute the layout and measurement of complex intersection markings, including stop bars, crosswalks, turning lanes, arrows, and custom symbols, using chalk lines, measuring tapes, and stencils.
  • Monitor weather conditions and pavement temperature to determine the appropriate application time and technique for different marking materials, ensuring optimal curing and durability.
  • Conduct quality control checks during and after application to verify line thickness, width, reflectivity, and alignment meet or exceed contract and regulatory requirements.
  • Safely load and unload heavy equipment and materials, including paint drums, thermoplastic melters, and bags of reflective glass beads, onto work vehicles.
  • Implement and maintain proper traffic control setups, including the strategic placement of cones, signs, and arrow boards, to create a safe work zone for the crew and the public.
  • Drive company vehicles, including large trucks that may require a specific class of driver's license, to and from job sites while adhering to all traffic laws.
  • Calculate material quantities needed for specific jobs to minimize waste and ensure sufficient supplies are available to complete the work without interruption.
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor field repairs on pavement marking equipment to minimize downtime and maintain project schedules.
  • Communicate effectively with foremen, project managers, and inspectors regarding job progress, potential issues, and site conditions.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and OSHA safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like high-visibility clothing, safety glasses, and respirators.
  • Operate a thermoplastic hand-liner or screed box to manually apply detailed markings and symbols that cannot be completed by larger machinery.
  • Manage the application of reflective glass beads, ensuring even distribution for enhanced nighttime visibility and compliance with retroreflectivity standards.
  • Document daily work activities, including hours worked, materials used, and tasks completed, on daily work reports or digital logs.
  • Participate in pre-job safety briefings (tailgate talks) to understand the specific hazards and safety plan for each unique job site.
  • Perform grinding or water-blasting operations to safely and effectively remove old or incorrect pavement markings with minimal damage to the road surface.
  • Assist in the setup and takedown of the entire job site, ensuring all equipment is secured, the area is clean, and all traffic control devices are removed upon project completion.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean and organized work truck and storage yard, ensuring all tools and materials are properly inventoried and stored.
  • Assist other construction crews on-site with tasks such as traffic control, site cleanup, or material handling when painting work is not active.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to new or less experienced crew members on equipment operation and safety procedures.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, safety incidents, or near-misses to the crew leader or supervisor immediately.
