Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Analyze and interpret complex isometric and P&ID blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to determine a precise layout for piping systems, fittings, and related equipment.
  • Perform intricate field measurements and lay out the routing of pipe systems, ensuring all angles, slopes, and connections align perfectly with engineering specifications and building codes.
  • Expertly cut, thread, groove, and bend various types of pipes, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy metals, using manual and powered tools like pipe threaders, benders, and plasma cutters.
  • Fabricate and pre-assemble complex piping spools and sub-assemblies in a controlled shop environment or on-site, optimizing for efficient and accurate final installation.
  • Specialize in the intricate assembly of complex pipe junctions, manifolds, and tie-ins, ensuring leak-proof, high-integrity connections at the most critical points in the system.
  • Perform proficient welding, brazing, and soldering to join pipes and components, or prepare pipe ends by grinding and beveling for certified welders, ensuring joints meet stringent quality and pressure-rating standards.
  • Install and secure a wide range of valves, fittings, gauges, pumps, and control components, confirming their proper orientation and accessibility for future operation and maintenance.
  • Conduct hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure tests on newly installed piping systems to identify and rectify any leaks, weaknesses, or blockages, meticulously documenting all test results for project turnover.
  • Safely rig, hoist, and position heavy pipes, spools, and related equipment into place using cranes, chain falls, and other lifting devices, adhering to all load calculations and safety protocols.
  • Install and align pipe supports, hangers, and anchors, such as spring hangers and U-bolts, to secure piping and properly manage system vibration and thermal expansion.
  • Execute precise bolting and torqueing procedures on flanged joints using hydraulic torque wrenches and other tensioning equipment to achieve specified gasket compression and a leak-free seal.
  • Perform pre-commissioning activities, including flushing, cleaning, and blowing down piping systems to remove debris and prepare them for operational service.
  • Select the appropriate type and size of pipes, fittings, gaskets, and related materials based on project specifications, and maintain an organized inventory of materials on-site.
  • Rigorously adhere to all company and site-specific safety policies, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and hot work procedures, and actively participate in daily safety briefings.
  • Visually inspect and dimensionally check all fabricated and installed components to ensure they meet a high degree of quality and conform to engineering requirements before and after installation.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on pipefitting tools and equipment to ensure they are in safe and optimal working condition at all times.
  • Carefully dismantle and remove old or obsolete piping systems, and perform repairs and modifications to existing systems as required by maintenance projects or plant upgrades.
    t- Work collaboratively with other trades, such as welders, millwrights, electricians, and insulators, to coordinate work sequences and avoid conflicts on a busy and dynamic job site.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including 'as-built' drawing markups, test reports, and daily progress logs, to ensure proper project documentation and handover.
  • Proactively identify and troubleshoot on-site issues, such as interferences, material discrepancies, or drawing errors, and propose effective, timely solutions to foremen or supervisors.
  • Install and configure expansion joints, loops, and other specialized devices designed to accommodate the thermal expansion and contraction of piping systems under various operating conditions.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Preferred Education:

  • Completion of a state-registered or federally-registered Pipefitter Apprenticeship program.
  • Diploma or certificate from a Vocational/Technical School in a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 4 - 8+ years of journeyman-level experience in an industrial, heavy commercial, or marine pipefitting environment.

Preferred:

  • Extensive experience in high-pressure steam, petrochemical, power generation, or semiconductor facilities is highly desirable. Certifications such as NCCER Pipefitter (or higher), and/or relevant welding certifications (e.g., ASME, API) are a significant advantage.
